I also heard that fueling the car at night gets you more gas? I guess due to evaporation?
I love the back of my car, the front... not so much |

It is a bad rumor made by people who do not know gas is stored underground and is always very close to 55 degrees no matter what the outside temp is.

It is interesting though that some pumps will say that they measure volume not energy content, which can change with temperature of the fuel (density)

All pumps measure volume. You cannot measure energy content outside of a lab.

I can see the need for 'deep enough' just from a personal experience re another liquid (water). During the hottest temperatures of any summer here, the cold water in my house isn't exactly what I would call cold. Same for my next door neighbor. He's retired from the construction industry, and he says it is because the builder didn't bury the pipes deep enough .

the Mythbusters show did a study on this exact topic, The results showed that (at least for their particular test car, not a Yaris) that it depends on the speed you are driving at, at highway speeds it is acturally better to turn on AC then opening the windows as the drag does affect gas milage, while in local traffic opening the windows gives better gas milage.

Windows open do contribute to drag...you're breaking the smoother wid line and instead forcing it into a dead end in the car. Lower speeds? No big deal. Higher speeds it starts to suck more and more. And ac is always a huge killer on these little engines. It sucks about 5mpg or so, consistently, on the highway, and more like 8-10mpg in town. Bleagh.

Your point is somewhat correct on the open windows, but not on the ac. We are in the era of more and more electronics and manufacturers are doing everything they can to get better gas mileage numbers, including electric ac, which does not hurt gas mileage as much or at all depending on the car.

I suppose that's true. I am using numbers observed from my Echo, rather elderly now I suppose. I barely use ac. Larger vehicles are of course less affected by ac use, as the power needed to drive the compressor is proportionately much less.
