filled '08 5 spped manual Liftback with 9.41 gallons of SUNOCO 89 at 332.5 miles ( 2 bars left ) and got 35.3 miles per gallon . The average temp was 20 , many hills , all season tires , 2 people (90% of time ) , 38% City /62% Hwy.. Better than the 33.62 m.p.g. I predicted .

This thing has not been as bothered by the cold temps as my Jeeps which drop 5+ mpg in the winter-must be the cold fluids in the differentials/transfer case and bigger transmissions that make the difference. I'm hanging in at 39-42 depending on if that tank was mostly freeway or city driving.

25mpg.
Average temperature was -28C, and I was over at a friend's most every night, so no block heater usage. It really is a 5K screamer when it's cold! |

I remember.....they used to wash your windshield and check your oil while car was fueling. Could always get a flat tire fixed fast and local mechanic did not have all sorts of electronics to deal with.

Although my Yaris is new....and shiny.....I have been getting around 34 MPG in mixed driving. Here in Indianapolis, the temps have been below 30 degees with a couple of days in the singe to minus digits.

Last time I filled up I got 33 mpg, and that was with a lot of idling and spinning of tires (I got stuck).

Another thing... Had two bars left when I put it to bed last night; this morning, after warming it up/thawing out the windshield for five minutes, it was FLASHING rapidly to refill (skipped the slow flash entirely). I raced over to the pump, where it took under 10 gallons, giving me the usual 32 mpg for this tank. When does yours start to flash???

I'm curious what octane you guys are using... I've been putting premium in mine, because the difference in a 10 gallon tank is only about $2-$3 extra per fill up and in our yari, that's not that often... Seems to have better pickup and mileage. What do you guys think?

First few months with mine so I do not have any previous winter numbers to compare to.
Warm weather I hit a few 45 mpg tanks, the average with my 6,500 miles is ~43.5 mpg. Winter mornings here we have temps in the teens, many 20’s and the overall average right now is 29. Afternoons usually into the 30’s or 40’s with many 50 degree highs. I have a full upper grille block that stays on until 55 F. I don’t really seem to be losing much mileage, maybe 1 or 2 mpg per tank. Current tank, which has been our coldest weather so far, is sitting at 43.1. I did have one bad commute with an accident on a long uphill that I have been slowly trying to recover from. I am working hard for this mileage! I’m working harder with the cold weather so maybe this is why the difference is small. I’m hoping that I stumbled on a technique to get me 44 mpg in the winter and this will give me closer to 50 mpg in warm weather. I’m chasing Voodoo22’s consecutive 50 mpg tank record. Watch your back Voodoo22… I’m coming after that record! |

If you drive it like you stole it you will see a slight increase in MPG with higher octane fuel but if you drive lighter or are a hypermiler you will see a large decrease in MPG with higher octane fuel.

In full summer set up i was getting close to 800 kilometers per tank, now with winter tires, and winter formulated gas and only city driving i'm lucky to get 400kms,as for using higher octane gas in a car meant for regular gas?an absurd waste of money.

I might be able to get it up to 500kms but that would be getting into the flashing last bar for sure.
