As for Consumer Reports, just go to your reference section at the library and xerox it... Ya gotta save money wherever you can! But you won't be impressed with what you read, because CR isn't very impressed with the Yaris. If you have your heart set on it, though, go for it. I can't advise about financing since I paid cash for mine. Have fun.

Check out Kelly Blue Book and see what your trade-in value is. If it's something your okay with, than do it. If you want more money and are willing to take the time to sell it yourself than do that.

Cheers!

Granted, it's a pain to sell it yourself (I was lucky enough to find a coworker to buy mine), but they'll basically offer you nothing on a trade-in unless it's practically new; they tried to tell me mine needed new brakes when I'd just replaced them... If you are trading in, don't tell them till the last minute...

Well, I think I'm partly lucky because my dad is going to take care of the old car selling. He said he will give me 1,000 on top of my money down- but I noticed he only wrote $900 on the sign on my car.. so we'll see what happens. The car is really bad, 13 years old, but also the whole side is smashed in from 2 accidents, no side window on the right, umm when you go over bumps it sounds like the car scrapes the tire, one of the doors doesnt close all the way so you hear all the wind on the highway, oh and the speedometer randomly goes down to 0 for quite a while then goes back up- even if you are obviously going a high speed.

SO, I dont think its worth even 1,000.. but thats what my dads giving me, so good luck to him in selling it for that much.

Now update on my new car- I received this last email from a dealer
"Great news! We will beat that number (15,843 out the door). Then you would still have your incentive choice of rebate or low financing whichever you prefer. Let me know when you would like to get started with the process. Thanks."

I'm not sure if he means he can get me less than 15,843 out the door counting rebate,
or not counting, so actually less than 14,843 out the door. I emailed him back for clarification. We'll see!

Usually out the door price means that the dealer keeps the rebate. However see what they say.

This is where it helps to know what a bank or credit union will give you for an interest rate. Then you can compare the numbers to see which is better. For example -- Bank rate 6% for 5 years borrowing 14,000 (15,000 - 1,000 rebate) = 2,240 + 14,000 =16,240. Dealer rate 4% for 5 years borrowing 15,000 (no rebate) = 1,575 + 15,000 = 16,575. You would save $335 by using the bank financing. I have no idea what current bank or dealer interest rates are. These numbers are for example only. When you know more I would be happy to run your numbers.

The economy must be tough! Dads usually just go out and fix their little girls up with a car, right?

Hey =) I prob do sound like a kid saying "my dad this, my dad that" lol and yeayea, I'm an adult at 21 (but i dont feel like it!).. and never bought a car before, and my dad says he knows what he's doing- if I had a friend who's bought more cars then my dad, I would prob have enlisted their help.
Plus, with the selling of our old car, it is technically my dad's still, I've just been driving and paying for insurance the past 5 years. But I believe its still his on paper, so thats why he's taking control of the selling.

Plus, I'm working hard to figure things out for myself, hence this forum and emailing dealers. I have a lower quote on the car from emailing a dealer by myself (thanks to the suggestion of you guys!) then my dad got from going to a dealer in person. So I am taking my own initiative and effort too.. and so far am better then my dad haha.

So the dealer emailed me back with "We were not using the rebate in our quote. You have the choice of using the rebate or using the low finance special, whichever you prefer. Thanks"

So I'm guessing theres no way he can turn around and say he's keeping the rebate if I have this email from him. Awesome, I think 14,843 is pretty good so far with all the options I want.

And yup, I will be heading to a bank for loan numbers before judgement day at the dealer.

Aaaand, boy do I wish my dad was fixing me up with a car. I'm putting down a 1,500 downment of my own money, and will be paying back the loan with my own money. My dads giving me the thousand for the current car I drive, and I am super thankful for that, although I've put way more then a thousand into that car through paying for the insurance!

Treat it right and you won't have to auto shop again for another 25-30 years.

I think that you are doing a great job! I wish that I had the access to information and the humility to ask questions that you are asking when I was 21. I thought that I knew it all and I paid the price. If you are 21, 31, 41 buying your first car is always a learning experience. Getting help from your dad is also ok. 10 years ago I got a nice 6 figure inheritance when my dad died. I help my wife’s daughter and grandson. It makes me feel good. I won’t be taken advantage of but it is nice to do small things that better their lives. 14,843 is a great price and probably better than most people are getting. Just watch the closing and say no to the extended warrantee.

Please post a picture when you get your new Yaris.

You are very smart in enlisting your father to help you. Salesmen and Women are very good at pressuring you into buying when you don't know very much; it's their job. The usually back it off when someone who knows what's going on is there. I went to a dealership once to look at a used BMW X5, ended up buying it and thought all was well. Come to find out there were a lot of "hidden" problems with it and I ended up losing money on it. Should have brought my father..

Sounds like the offer they're giving you is pretty sweet. I'm with Nemelek on the financing, check your bank to see if you can save some money. And haggle the heck out of them in the paper signing room!

I tried to do the consumer reports thing but it said I need a $39 sub, and its another 14 to get the new car report.. if you see this post.. you wouldnt happen to still be subscribed to Consumer would you? I can pay for the report (have paypal), its the $39 subscription that makes me not want it.
Oh, you're right I almost missed your post.

Hmmm. I don't know what's up with that. My subscription was cheaper but I don't have access to every year, I think it stopps at 07 and only goes back a few years, and only for certain cars, not all of them. Don't know anything about $39. I've noticed they have several subscription levels but I don't have access to the more advanced (more expensive) subscription levels. Sorry.

"Usually out the door price means that the dealer keeps the rebate. However see what they say." Nooooooooo; I got an out-the-door priced quoted on e-mail (which I held him to), and that DID include rebate; just specify that in writing. It's true that, when you finance, you have a choice of a better rate for that OR the rebate, whichever you choose. Hey, good for you for learning from your dad; just as long as you're not leaning on your dad, and it doesn't sound like you are. You're our youngest (baby) poster...

We'll want to see pics when you get it!

I'm the youngest?? I don't believe it!

Something I'm a little confused by that my dad said he found out from a dealer (but none of the dealers I emailed told me)

I thought I could get the 1,000 rebate and still use their financing (just not at the discount) if I can't get a better deal at a bank.

But supposedly, you can only get the 1,000 rebate if you're paying the whole price in full right away and won't be using a loan.

We're actually going to the dealer that quoted me the cheapest price today *just to talk*- I won't even have down payment money until my next paycheck so they can't sucker us in today.

Oh also, my dad sold my car for $700 to someone for parts... they are taking it before the end of the month.. its coming so soon! And guh, I kind of feel bad for my current ride =( I will miss it. I started calling it Two-Face. One side looks perfect, but the other side looks totaled. As the saying goes- It was a p-o-s.. but it was my p-o-s.. i will miss it!

You're not alone! A couple of us around here (I won't name names ) are still attached to their old cars

It's fun to get a new car, though. You'll have new experiences with it and you'll get attached to it, too. And there is that new car smell... Plus, the Yaris is clearly the best looking car in any parking lot, so it makes it all worth it, well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Do'nt forget we want pictures!

dont think it matters where you get the loan or how you are paying for it. you can apply the rebate toward the car or they give you a form to fill out and sign and send in and the rebate check comes directly to you.
