enigne is likely fine

ive bounced mine off the limiter on several occasions...mainly at a lapping day where there was a section of the track allowed me to go fast enough to top out 2nd, but was too short to be worth the shift to 3rd....

just banged off the limiter for a few seconds before hitting the corner...

powertrain warranty if the engine dies...

+1, this happened to me the other day too, my rev limiter before has stopped me around 6.7k but for some reason i got past 7.2 the other day and it was still on the rise.....

Considering Toyota cheaped out on including a tach (even the mazda 2 comes with a small but functional tach), the rev limiter would be a lifesaver for knowing if you went to high before shifting. But the rev limiter is there to save you, so I'm guessing even if you did rev limit it quite ofter, but not every single time, there still wouldn't be any problems. Toyota would lower the rev limiter if it wasn't safe where it's at now.

the first is fuel based over rev

the other is a mechanical over rev which can be achieved through poor downshifting

Bingo. Hitting the rev limiter is no problem-the limiter is there to PREVENT over speeding the engine.

A mis-shift is the scary stuff because there is nothing to prevent an over speed condition and the pistons can actually hit valves in extreme cases. This is what would worry me.

My brother has a 94 Civic he drove for 12 years and he used to hold it on the rev limiter just for the heck of it. Now it is strictly a race vehicle and is still seeing the rev limiter! No problems. I wouldn't do it for sport, but hitting the rev limiter is no big deal. Overspeeding the engine is another story!

Since you were going from 1st to second, the acceleration momentum could have kept it revving up. Did you notice a drop in acceleration right before you shifted? Im not sure if the limiter cuts fuel, spark or both, but it may have just kicked in. Or was it down hill at all? These little motors can take quite a beating and be fine.

hi, one question, is there any problem if i switch gearbox to "N" position when i've reached some speed which allows the car go by itself without acelerating? or for example in a downward slope?
