the light on/off switch is ergonomically designed so that when you
want to turn on the lights you don't need to fully remove your hand
from the steering wheel.

this feature also works at dusk.

If you can't figure out on your own when to twist the stalk, maybe you shouldn't be driving at all.

I'm never seen anyone nit-pick over a car as much as you.

I'll tell you what the dealership likes to tell me, "this car is very basic, it's not a camry"

Definition of CONNOISSEUR

expert

especially, one who understands the details, technique, or principles of an art and is competent to act as a critical judge

Judgment informed by intuition is essential, but it must be grounded in a thorough understanding of the work itself.

def 2. A person of informed and discriminating taste.

I don't accept the excuse "this car is very basic" for sloppy engineering.

Haha, I tell them that's why I bought it.

As others have stated, you could just always drive with the lights on. It would make you more visible anyway.

But to go in a completely opposite direction, I feel that some people pull out in front or cut me off intentionally. Almost as if they think the car will be slower than it actually is or because they kinda look down their nose at such a little car. and you are in Texas, where everything is bigger.

It could also be that the drivers of the other vehicles are entirely inept and probably shouldn't even be driving anyway. (there are plenty of them out there)

I wouldn't dare go so far as to call the engineering of the Yaris as sloppy. It wins awards and has been a best seller in Europe for the better part of a decade.

Why not just install a sensor that automatically turns the lights on when it notices a lesser amount of light?

Most cars in this range and in the ranges above don't have what you are expecting as an option.

Good grief, if you are such an informed and discriminating motorist who enjoys driving around in fine automobiles, why aren't you driving around in a Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus or Jaguar?

Sloppy engineering?! There are 29,213 members on this forum and not once in my almost two years here have I heard of anyone complain about the car not "telling" them to turn their lights on when it's dark out. Seems like that's some pretty solid engineering if 29,212 think that it works fine.

Yes, a sensor would fix this. I think GM cars all have sensors for headlights; or at least all the ones I've own, and they were cheap cars (Saturn and S10 pickup).

Maybe swapping a sedan traditional instrument cluster would be a better solution.

Why don't you just trade that cheap Yaris in on a new Lexus, since you think you are a connoisseur?

My Cavalier had the "daytime running lights" - that's what they are called, but I still had to turn my headlights on myself at dusk. Duh.

My sedan cluster doesn't have the nifty silver gauge rings like in the picture but it isn't always lit like the lb. I may be willing to trade if our cars are close in mileage and we can arrange a way to swap at the same time.. I'm just over 30kmiles

I can like cheap cars as well as luxury cars. There's beauty in a simple utilitarian car too. It's just that I've never had this much pet peeve on a single car before, not even on a cheap POS GM econo box. I had a 92 Corolla, and it was perfectly executed. I could not find anything disagreeable about it. The Yaris might get excellent mark for reliablity and performance, but ergonomically, I would give it a failing grade.

Cons: electric steering on highway, LB instrument cluster, clutch pedal interferenece, throttle pedal too light, throttle lag, interior plastic scuffs too easily, annoying seat belt buzzer, difficult to see radio display, head rest tilt too far forward, stinky fabrics, etc.

My son is autistic...it's not autism. I think it's the latter.

As for the self-proclaimed "connoisseur," you want fries with that as well?!?

How about learning to operate a motor vehicle, which includes turning the lights on and off at the appropriate time as defined by the Texas Transportation Code?!?

Quote:
§547.302. DUTY TO DISPLAY LIGHTS. (a) A vehicle shall display each lighted lamp and illuminating device required by this chapter to be on the vehicle:

(1) at nighttime; and
(2) when light is insufficient or atmospheric conditions are unfavorable so that a person or vehicle on the highway is not clearly discernible at a distance of 1,000 feet ahead.
(b) A signaling device, including a stoplamp or a turn signal lamp, shall be lighted as prescribed by this chapter.
(c) At least one lighted lamp shall be displayed on each side of the front of a motor vehicle.
(d) Not more than four of the following may be lighted at one time on the front of a motor vehicle:
(1) a headlamp required by this chapter; or
(2) a lamp, including an auxiliary lamp or spotlamp, that projects a beam with an intensity brighter than 300 candlepower.

Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.
Quote:
§541.401. MISCELLANEOUS TERMS. In this subtitle:

(5) "Nighttime" means the period beginning one-half hour after sunset and ending one-half hour before sunrise.
Here's a clue...the headlights don't come on automatically in inclement weather either!
