I logged off and then checked the MLB standings and scores. My #3 team close by is dragging around the worst record in the majors, but my top 2 Giants and A's looked headed to the post season along with your Yankees as they continue their winning ways. Should be an interesting last month to the season this year more than most years.

I love your state, I just think the government entities at almost every level are reaming the taxpayers, a.k.a not giving very good value for each tax dollar.

I don't think most people blindly buy the "Eco-friendly" bit. I think most people just like to get new cars. I know every time a friend or family member gets a new car, I get all antsy and start looking at new cars. Most of the time, I beat back those urges because of the simple fact that what I have is good enough.

I think the Eco-friendly / high MPG boast of the newest hybrids give people that final push to convince themselves that they NEED a new car, just like higher HP or AWD for others. Sure, one can sit down and do very simple calculations to show that spending tens of thousands of dollars for a $10-30 savings per fill up can net a break even point of about a decade or more, but that's not what its all about.

I'm talking from experience here, because that's what happened to me. The wife got a new car and I ended up buying one too because of new-car-itis.

As for the $10k 40mpg+ econo-box... Nissan has a $10k Versa Sedan that's about $11k-$12k. I believe there is a Kia that is around the same price range, so they are out there.

Whenever I hear that someone has traveled to some place that I haven't been to but sounds interesting, I want to know more. I do a little reading and sometimes am able to incorporate it into an already planned trip. A friend of mine here heard I was taking a trip to Florida for the opening of Marlins Park. She had planned a relative's wedding on Captiva Island and she told me I had to go there. I made sure I did go Captiva Island, and it was great.

You have some wonderful years directly ahead of you without traveling. Just make sure you notice the smallest little things your kids do. The smallest little detail will pop into your consciousness a few years later, making you smile and making your day. I don't have kids, but I am so fortunate to have a little cousin who, emotionally, is like a daughter to me. Her mom did an international adoption as a single mom and my aunt and I went with her to share the first meeting experience. My little cousin is 10 now, but I got to spend A LOT of time with her before she was 7, especially between the ages of 3-7. I got to take her to get her first Brownie uniform, take her to the beach, take her trick-or-treating, take her for walks in the mountains, pay for some of her tennis lessons and play tennis with her, play cards with her,play board games with her, go to ballet practice, go to gymnastics practice, take her to swing and play on the rings at the park, play miniature golf with her, pick her up from pre-school and elementary school, comfort her when sick and give her medicine that the doctor prescribed, take her to sporting events, and so many other things. She inspired my Yarisworld moniker -- when she was fairly little she liked to (safely) use the interior of my Yaris as her own personal exploration module.

My little cousin's mom (also my cousin) drives me nuts re some things that have nothing to do with her daughter, but her mothering....it just takes my breath away....as it does just about everyone in my family..the perfect mixture of love and discipline and the best mother I have ever witnessed. I know it's incredibly silly, as many things make me happy, but knowing the person I love the most in this world (my little cousin) has the best mother I have ever witnessed guiding her....that alone just makes me glow with happiness from the inside out every time I think about it. My cousin made sure she had her ducks in a row before adopting and is able to give her daughter a great life, and knowing that my little cousin is getting joy from her life is my greatest joy.

Art Linkletter, who probably became most famous for interviewing kids on television, referred to the ages 3-8 as the 'Kids will say the darndest things' years and I found this to be very true, things that will make you smile years into the future. I was once a last minute stand in date when a housemate's boyfriend couldn't make it to a wedding. Mr. Linktetter was also a guest at the wedding and I got to meet him and speak with him for a couple of minutes. My impression was -- this may be the happiest person I have ever met....and no wonder. He got to spend all that time listening to hilarious things that little kids say. Savor every minute you can over the span of these precious years.

^^^^^ Perhaps it is different with sons. I don't know, but I'd imagine some things would be the same. I know I also got to spend a fair amount of time with the parents and brothers and sisters of my little cousin's friends and her friend's brothers said some pretty funny things over the years.
