im one of the many who get 40+ mpg's (lifetime) in my manual yaris (without the use of hypermiling), so the math wouldn't work out to well in favor of the C.

additionally, I find all the CVT's currently being used (in sub $25K cars, at least) to suck all the joy out of driving completely.

heck, using my 43.5 mpg average in the yaris and using 54 mpg avg for the C and 15000 miles/yr (at 3.70/gallon).....I save a grand total of $248 per year. it would only take me 20.16 years to make up a difference of $5000.

I think the reasons for spending extra on the C should be if you just find it a nicer car....quieter, nicer interior, smoother, whatever it may be.

You start getting more into actual real world figures, and the gap becomes obvious. 13,476 miles = 374 gallons per year @ 36 mpg. At $3.70 a gallon that is $1384. 13,476 miles = 270 gallons per year @ 50 mpg. At $3.70 a gallon that is $999 a year. Supposedly 13,476 is the average mileage an American drives a year. That is $385 a year. So if you drive that little, it isn't worth it unless you want the luxuries. Or if your Yaris cannot get 36 mpg. Or if you plan to keep it over 10 years. Etc. If you drive 20,000 mile a year, 36 mpg = 556 & 2057. Or 400 & 1480. That is 577. That is only 7 years to make up the difference. Since the average car fleet is over 12 years old now, that is real world math people should do before they make the second biggest purchase they ever will.
I was trying to be funny. The OP is trading in a six year old car! He is just now getting to the point where legendary toyota reliability is paying off (going those extra hundreds of thousand miles that other cars won't go without $$$)

A few mods, like a throttle controller, and mashing it to the floor fixes most of that. But yes, I agree in general.

200k??!! I have 291k on my tercel running 16lbs of boost...your yaris is fine. Keep it. 300+ is not unrealistic at all in the Yaris.

The only reason to get a new car is when the Yaris is totaled in my opinion.

I have been thinking over the last couple months that a new daily will be in the cards over the next couple years and the Yaris will become a strictly play car. I have mulled over what I would be doing next and the Prius was one of my considerations, but really when you get right down to it there isn't a need or want that I have that would warrant it. I am just not into the LB scene and even though the Corolla would be tempting albeit with a turbo install for sure I most likely if I can swing it will go with either a GS350-F or IS350-F. I know that these are far from what this discussion calls for since it appears that this is all about mpg yet again, but man oh man those F series cars are sugary sweet!

You strike me as an Audi A4 type.

What say you about one of those?

Audi is nice too, but for the most part I am a Toyota man. Also the maintenance on Audi cam get pretty expensive. Not saying Lexus is cheap, but I believe it would be less.
