the SEVERE GEAR is GL-5 and not safe for synchros , could make for difficult shifting and damage internal parts . The MTG is fine , states that here under PRODUCT DESCIPTION www.amsoil.com/storefront/mtg.aspx . Mentions TOYOTA as well .

I think I'd stick with the GL-4 as well.

used MOBIL 1 ( 75w-90 , GL-5 ) in the 2000 PRIZM ( Corolla ) with a speed manual which is similiar to that of the YARIS and threw of the synchros making for grinding when shifting to different gears , downshifting , and the clunk / harder engagement ( grinding ) into reverse worse . When replaced with the REDLINE MT-90 ( GL-4 ) all that disappeared

during this time of using MT-90 and MOBIL1 A.T.F. for power steering the PRIZM got a little over 43 miles per gallon . The conditions were : 70% hwy. / 30% city ( speeds up to 70 m.p.h ) , 2 people 90% of time , hot and humid , Tire Pressue : 34 P.S.I. ( Cooper Trendsetter SE ) , GULF 93 octane , and a dose of CHEVRON Techron . The motor oil was regular PENNZOIL 5w-30 . The miles were from looking at '08 YARIS and COROLLAs . The gas mileage that fill is very close to both our '08 YARIS ( automatic sedan and 5 speed manual L.B. ) for best fuel economy . They're best so far has been a little over 44 m.p.g.. Miss that car

So Redline MT-90 is the best for tranny, better than AMSOIL?

I'd say the MT-90 and Amsoil's GL-4 75W-90 are both close and very good, probably both are better than my Pennzoil GL-4 75W-90, but I wouldn't care to breakup the theme that I got going on.

PENNZOIL now has a GL-4 synthetic gear oil , http://www.pzlqs.com/Tech/Pdsheet/Do...E75W90GL-4.PDF and http://www.pennzoil.com//products/ge...#SyntheticGear , wonder if this is as good as their PLATINUM motor oil that gets very good U.O.A.s at www.bobistheoilguy.com . May have to give this a try in the future . Should cost less than AMSOIL or REDLINE , may be difficult to find . Sorry to break the mold . Couldn't resist

Still waiting on Napa to give me a call when the Pennzoil comes in...they said 1 week, which I think would have been the 13th.

Hell, old 3rd-gen Civic manual transmissions recommended 30W engine oil in the transmission, and the engine if you lived in temperate and mild climates. Made it insanely-cheap to just change all the fluids every oil change, since 30W is just about bottom-barrel for price.

![]() give us the scoop once it's been installed . May want to give it a try myself over time . Keep seeing very good U.O.A.s for the PLATINUM motor oil at B.I.T.O.G.. Would think their synthetic gear oil be a good performer too . Hang in there . ![]() |
