I agree with Annn. Removing also allows you to clean up the cowl real well. You would be surprised at what you can find in there, particularly if the vehicle is kept outside.

I spent the extra 10 minutes to remove the cowl, it made the job alot easier wit it out of the way.

![]() I also like the video by KYB. Very understandable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FEIDAFDnTA&t=436s I will most probably change the shocks in a few weeks. The springs are not cracked. Can they be "tired" so that it would make sense to change them too despite the fact that they seem intact? My Yaris 2007 is still on the original shocks and springs and they are nearly gone according to the suspension diagnostic test. |

To compress the springs you can easily get a compressor worth 10 bucks. It will do the job nicely, not as fast as a professional electric compressor but it is safe comparing to any other home-invented mean of compressing the coils. Compressed coil is a grenade ready to explode.

Interesting that they do not show preloading the front before fully tightening the struts as is recommended in most instructions that come with struts. Likely, if you are getting an alignment shortly after install, it doesn't matter...I guess.

^ It's not necessary on the Yaris, if you look at how the top mounts work.

Very good but one thing left out. They need to point out that the upper mounting nut is double. Removing the top nut is the removaql one to get the shock out. The shock assembly has a nut of its own. And it isn't necessary to remove the cover plastic or wipers.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I'm struggling to remove the top nut with my offset wrench and hex key in place

If I recall, that was one of the tougher nuts to remove. Have you tried using a cheater bar?

The torque on that nut is only 55Nm. I couldn't get it with a regular box wrench, but an offset made it easy. Rotate it so the hex key is pressed up against something, then you can get the nut loose.
