I went back to conventional valvoline after a month and suddenly the engine seemed more dampened in operating noise and my MPG went right back up to 43. This is only my experience with it and I've read a few others that noticed this same effect with their Yaris.
Hmmm, when I used Valvoline Syn my MPG went up 1.5 MPG over using conventional Valvoline, both at 5w-30.

I think your change in MPG is caused by some other reason. The difference in MPG between ANY oil brand is 2% or less. The increase in MPG when using the "best" synthetics is just 1% to 2% over ANY conventional.

sorry had to disagree... synthetic did not give me better mileage it actually dropped my mpg ..I use to get 580-590 average on 36 liters now im getting 540-560km...go figure .same driving habits same temperature..

oh yah 5w-20 same as stock.

unless you go for 0w-20 then mpg will definetely increase..

After reading a few of the comments here I do indeed feel like my engine is actually quieter now that I've gone back to conventional oil.
I don't see any reason why my engine could'nt go 300k too.

Just did my second oil change today. I now have about 13K miles on the Yaris. I switched at about 4K miles -- just felt like it. I use Amsoil 5W-20, and change it every 7,500K miles.

Wow, my car didn't blow up and the earth didn't stop turning. To the OP, just do whatever you want.

Overkill not needed for my entry level econo hatcback

$11.39 for Redline's 5w30 real synthetic, $3.95 for Pennzoil's phoney 5w30 "full synthetic"...no brainer, 1/3 the price and will still most likely make it to 300K miles with no major issues with the motor.

Even with it's morning breath I don't think I could ever hate my Yaris.

There is an oil discussion in every auto forum that I belong to. For me Mobile 1 is the second best oil money can buy after Amsoil(creators of syn. oil). In my yaris I switched to syn. at first oil change. I am changing my oil every 7500 miles with Mobile 1 5w30 and toyota oem filter. I am currently at 70k and the old oil always looks great when I change it with what seems no consumption at all. There is zero sludge build up anywhere I can see. For my money this is the best combo. I am not planning on driving the car for 300k+ but if it comes down to that, I am confident that my engine will be in great shape.

Exxon-Mobil has a 10 buck off coupon on M1 - advanced fuel economy 0w-30 oil on the Mobil1 site. WallyfromchinaWorld is selling M1 afe for 22 bucks for 5qt jug. So, U R out the door for 12 bucks 4 a big jug. And, dont wotry about the 0W AFE - it's even BETTER oil than the STD M1 5w-30 - more synthetic base and a dash o'moly.

BTW the only real synth with esters you can get here is Redline, maybe AMsoil SSo. And maybe BP GC green (vintage) but GC is not for the Yaris as it's >3.5 HTHS and around 12cSt at boiling = too thick for the lil yar. Remember PAO base is not a good boundary lubricant, has poor film strength, and is not stable at high temps w/o ADD packs to prevent oxidisation. Di-ester is all these things and is the only REAL synthetic if you're paying 7-10 $ a qt.
All that said Mobil formulations are better now than last year when they had a hiccup.

I know Amsoil is "The First In Synthetics" ...just makes me wonder why they choose to get their synthetic stock from Exxon/Mobil and just add their own additive packages to it.

Me neither. My Yaris's morning breath smells like alcohol, though.

Mine is just kind of a musty stinch that lasts maybe 3-4 seconds; never did it last season. Found the perfect cure tho'...Fram FreshBreeze cabin filter toned it down some, so I tried giving the dash a mint (The BUG Air Freshener) ...placed it on top of the cabin air filter

Ah, you have a little mildewy lint in your air conditioning. I was speaking of the exhaust. E10 is ubiquitous here.

i got amsoil running for 5 months its about 9000 km now guess what though oil is still yellowish i can still see right thru the oil..and this is my first amsoil oil put on the engine. again oil being dark doesnt mean it needs changing..but oil being clear on the due month for change is just amazing..

No such thing as Mobil1 5k conventional. You mean Mobil Clean 5000 conventional.
