You just have bad luck or else abuse your rides or it is possibly karma. I had a 96 Tercel and to this day the guy I sold it to when I bought my Yaris in 06 is driving it with over 220k miles with only replacing oil, spark plugs, and a pair of wheel bearings. I am about to roll 75k onto my Yaris and have done pretty aggressive/taxing driving not to mention have installed the turbo going on 20k miles already with nary and issue that I didn't create/cause.
About the only North American made car that I owned that was worth a damn was the ones I owned that were pre-1970. I am saddened to say so. As for dealers they for the most part are only good enough to gran the keys from and that is all. The disgusting truth is that "good" dealer is the exception rather than the rule on a large scale.

Having a truck is nice. Trips to Home Depot, 4 wheeling, and hauling. However for my daily driver I spend $2000 less/year on fuel by driving the Yaris.

Absolutely. A truck is a nice secondary vehicle. I have one I use for firewood, hauling, hunting/fishing/camping, etc. Oh yeah, it is a '05 Tundra DC and it is the most trouble free truck I have ever owned.

Wow, that really sucks that your Yaris was a lemon. Given how poorly you were treated by Toyota over the matter, I don't blame you for vowing to never buy another Toyota....I wouldn't buy one either, if that happened to me.

nice job throwing in that the tires ware at an alarming rate, dealership tires are typically a softer compound than regular and will not last as long as normal tires. they typically do this to make the car have a smoother ride and handle better to help make you want buy the car. I had to change out all 4 of mine before I hit 25k.
as for the F-150, they are a fairly good truck and have one of the toughest suspensions you can get, motor mounts, power steering, and transmissions, not so tough on them. had 96 with a 300 straight 6 and 5 on the floor, duel gas tanks and a long bed. loved it until i replaced the motor mount for the 16th or 17 time,2 replacement power steering pumps and the tranny was pretty much gone. of course i sold it and put a clutch into an 88 civic hatch that had about 3 years until it started having electrical problems and my wife made me get a new car so i got the yaris simple for the reliability of the toyotas that my family has had. 79 yota pick up 500k+ miles with a crack in the block that would open up when it got hot but it would still drove and started every time. |

Big white pickup would be nice but i dont have a reason to own one and filling it up on a regular basis would probably make huge dent in my personal finances.
Out of curiosity how much would it cost to fill one of those pickups at $1.50 a liter and how far can you expect to go on a tank full of gas..

Atleast you bought a Ford truck. I'm from domestic ground zero and I know what's good and what's bad in terms of American quality. I hate to say it but prior to the last year or two, I'd stay far as hell away from any Chryslers. Transmission problems that has plauged the company for decades. As far as trucks go, Ford definitely have the best in terms of quality. In looks, I LOVE the Dodge trucks but like I said, I'd steer clear of Chryslers.
The question that begs to be asked though is you said you were tired of spending money on that Yaris, what do you think that Ford is going to cost you in gas? You'll be lucky if you break even in compared to if you just fixed the repairs

OP had a lemon, all manufacturers have lemons, disappointing to see how many people here are acting immature.. if i had a lemon sedan i wouldnt buy another toyota either, im also a ford guy as well, they do make the best pickups, they INVENTED pickups.. and that pickup is more practical to him then a hatchback...

He should not expect and will not receive any sympathy if that is his approach. A Yaris tugging around 800 lbs of boat it's entire life is going to go through wear items (and nearly everything he listed was wear items) quicker than a Yaris driven normally by normal people. It is a small economy subcompact. Not a towing vessel. -C

[QUOTE=firemachine69;638778]Honestly, a little fourteen-footer with a 9.9 Merc was alright. So long as I had a solid (concrete/paved) ramp.
Even Dodge can't produce that level of junk on a normal work day. REALLY? |

Calculated mileage is 18MPG right now (yes, US gallons.) I lost substantial mileage while doing the whole stop-go ritual on Yonge street in downtown Toronto (to-from the 401).
I think you're forgetting that beyond 30MPG, you're talking tenths of a liter's difference (I.E. minimal.) If you do basic math, mileage is about right for weight (truck has 3.55 gearings, FYI). Your Yaris weighs 2300lbs (basic power with auto we'll assume), roughly 40MPG is the average anecdotal I've come up with YW. Now my truck weighs ~5500lbs, so halve the mileage, and you get basically what I do. Keep in mind I no longer have to tap the gas pedal for fear of getting squished. Even Caravans make way for my big, slow (somewhat) truck. Quote:
![]() But frankly, it took me a road-trip to even use up a tank. I'll be mildly surprised if I need to fill-up the tank before mid-May... A thousand kilometers per month (figure 600'ish miles) is actually quite alot of mileage for me. This is partially due to the fact that I live less than three miles from work. ![]() One really nice thing I never even thought about is that I can do a five-hour return roadtrip, and not have to worry about gas whatsoever. I'm currently averaging 18MPG. Not bad for 5500lbs. ![]() ![]() Quote:
The car was used very briefly for towing duties (think maybe a dozen times over the year I had the hitch installed, max). Within the specifications listed by Toyota. The car was driven like gramps was taking a sunday stroll all the time (I forgot to mention - it got absurdly bad mileage considering how gentle I was to it. Lifetime average is 31MPG.) That's just nuts, considering how many folks on here brag of the absurd wheels they mount on the car (while making threads about driving 120MPH on the autobahn, I may add...) with minimal mechanical issues. Some people are taking my hate-on for Toyota a little too personally, I guess... One major disappointment is my tools are nearly all "small-vehicle", so Kijiji is about to see lots of action 'round my neck of the woods. ![]() P.S. Any commuter that buys a truck for such duties is out of his marbles.

I've had my Yaris since February 2009 and have had few problems. I agree about the tires, they were going bad at 26000 miles, so I replaced them with Michelins. I did damage a tire pressure sensor by using tire foam but other than that, the Yaris has been a great car.

I'm sorry you had so much problems with your Yaris. I bought mine in 08, and I replaced the battery last year and due a oil change. My Yarrie has driven fine. I'm 10 minutes from work when I drive, 30 minutes by bike and 45 minutes when I walk. My car loves when I do some rare open road driving. When I first go Yarrie, I drove to St. Augustine. One these days I'm going to drive down to the Keys to see how I handle the 7 to 8 hour drive to get there, I live in central FL. Good luck with your truck. We use to own Chevy S10 long bed, and by time the Chevy finally died it looked like it had been thru a war. One of the reasons I bought my Yarrie is that it remind me of my Ford Pinto, yes, a Pinto and it did get rear end twice and no explosions. The heads went bad and I bought Pontiac. Yarrie replace my "Cally" Chevy Cavalier.
