NOW i just drive in the right lane at 60mph and RELAX. Seriously, its awesome. its relaxing and i get to work in a good mood. Plus im saving gas money.
Sure i get places 5 mins later than before, but its all good.

Seriously, i love driving slow now. haha.

Cool My mileage!

Assuming US gallon = 3.79L
Imperial gallon = 4.55L

31.4L - 560km = 6.907ImpGal / 8.285USGal & 350 miles = 50.67 imperial MPG or 42.25 US MPG or 5.61 L/100km

34.8L - 608km = 7.655gal / 9.18USGal & 380 miles = 49.64 imperial MPG or 41.39 US MPG or 5.72 L/100km

I am on MEGA-sticky street tires (Kumho Ecsta MX 205/40/17). I acheived this by filling the tank all the way up to the top of the neck and then refilling to the top again to determine volume burned. I accelerate very gently and shift at no higher than 2500 rpm. Each tank had two full throttle accelerations (For each tank: one was from a stop all the way through 1st and 2nd gear and then jumped to 5th to cruise, the second was only 3rd gear to pass a vehicle). I coast to a stop, no engine braking.

The first tank was on my drive to work which is 85% highway on which I usually maintain a speed of 82-87 kph. The second tank was a long drive to the Bruce Penninsula and I maintained the same speed and very few stops. So far I have ~1900 kms on the car! I am very impressed.

So nice to read your posts above gentlemen. I think you are having fun whilst saving money on fuel.
I am addicted to driving economically. Its fun. I get satisfaction every time when I believe I have a new record on fuel economy.
Actually, economical driving style still allows me to drive up to traffic speed in cities or on highways. Generally, it is just things like not racing only to stop in front of a red light or speeding up just to get ahead of one single car and then slow down again. But other than these, one can improve one's cars or skills in many other areas to get better mileage.
It is almost an art not to drive too fast and yet not get people behind to become impatient. However, this is achievable.

Here's an update:
total distance driven so far: 7486 miles
total amount of fuel bought: 177.14 gallons (18 fill-ups averaging 9.84 gallons)
80% highway
AC on half the time
doing the economical driving style
I think it's not too bad getting 42.25 mpg

Hi JaiTomato,

Since you are in the US, you acheived the same as me (see post above)! I also got 42.25 (US) MPG. Since you have a sedan, it is that much MORE impressive!!!

Nice work!
cheers

Filled up yesterday & got 39mpg (US).

the first 1/2 of the tank was mostly highway... The 2nd 1/2 had alot more city & included moving a ton of stuff for my gf.
no A/C, and kept it around 60-65mph on the highway.

hope to break the 40mpg next tank.

I've only been getting around 27 mpg, 50% a/c, stop and go highway commute 10 miles each way. Obviously, this is greatly dissapointing, but was wondering if anywone else living in an ethanol blend area (or the DC metro area) has had the same problem. So far, I've been filling up with ethanol blended 87...

Yeah - I'm in a 10% ethanol region and I'm only getting about 30(US) mpg in my automatic tranny liftback. Then again I drive 75-80 mph on the highway if I'm not sitting in traffic.

Fuel economy variation

It may be helpful if people gave details in a standardized manner like below.

fuel economy - 41.5 mpg US
transmission - automatic
terrain - flat with few small hills
avg length of trips - 100 miles highway
driving mix - 10% city/90% highway
driving style - very conservative
top speed - 60-65 mph
AC - 0% (windows up)
gas - 10% ethanol blend
odometer mileage - 8,000 miles
tire pressure - 42 psi
avg # of passengers - 1 (driver only)
cargo/towing - none

This would help a lot as people who take short trips that do not allow the engine to warm up may be getting up to 50% less mileage , who are aggressive drivers in an urban environment, or get stuck in major traffic often like in Baltimore/DC or LA should and will get worse fuel economy.

Just found some gas mileage improvement tips from I Go Cars:
The tips per se are not too different from what I have read from elsewhere. It is the savings achievable listed out in percentage terms which interest me.

http://www.i-go-cars.com/autos/category/gas-mileage/

Also, if you click Gas Saving Tips (or click this - http://www.i-go-cars.com/autos/gas-saving-tips/) and go to the bottom of the page opened, you will find that it says warming up after start is not necessary for modern engines. It is novel to me. It may be right but I would personally recommend to make additional reference to individual cars' user manuals.

Very interesting article thanks! GO YARIS!!! Sure the new Aveo may have more features but it still doesn't get the milage in this class, or at least not up to par from what I read even with the new one coming out, then there's the Dawoo...we already know about that.

Yes, yes! Also, the Yaris and the Scion together outsell the Aveo. Actually, the Aveo is not bad, I still think that it is mainly the class leading fuel economy that helps the Yaris. Of course, the Yaris' predicted reliability, its cute look and higher resale value have their parts to play too.

More than anything I think it has to do with the resale, and predicted reliability.. besides all that the Aveo is a much less appealing looking car..
