I went from having a company car to having to pay for my own gas, insurance, tolls etc. My Jeep gets 13mpg highway, less in traffic. I now get reimbursed the federal rate (currently 48.5 cents per mile) to use my own vehicle. The Yaris pays for itself easily via my job and I keep the Jeep for fun.

I did trade in a Ford truck, though, Mr. Smarty Pants. I think the check I wrote ended up being $75X.XX. Ha ha! Seriously, I bought it because I drive 100 miles round trip to work everyday, and the Tundra (at the time) had the worst gas mileage of all the full size pickups, except for the Titan, which is junk. Going from 18 to 35 mpg is pretty cool. Now I have much more redneck money each month to pour into guns, NASCAR collectibles, and my local Republican party.

As a first car it was:
1. cheap (bought it used) 2. its class safetiest (Euro NCAP) 3. and its economic (5.8 liters / 100 km) (combined) (MultiMode) That´s why i bought yaris |

Why I bought it- Low purchase price, safety rating, gas mileage, Toyota reliability, euro-styling.
Bought to be a commuter beast of burden. Ownship experiences: how pleasant it is to drive around town (with the rear anti-sway bar), how poorly it tracks (holds the straight ahead) at high speed on the highway & how easy it is to DIY service. |

1. 167K on prior ride and starting to burn >=1.5 quart oil every oil change
2. Yaris doubled my MPG over the 120 mile daily commuting roundtrip :-) 3. Similar form as my first car (76 Civic hatch) 4. best value (MPG + finance cost) at 5 year & 10 year intervals 5. Availability of Toyota and after market parts (I do all the maintenance and many repairs myself) 6. This Forum! (a noticeably active community with lots of information) |

I like hatchback designs, I like small cars and I want good quality and reliability. And it should be free, if possible Yaris fit the bill on most of my requirements

we had a jeep grand cherokee limited 4.7 V8 that the transmission went on.. we foolishly replaced it (jeep had 175K on it) and then shortly after gas spiked and we decided we would dump the jeep and get into a car. we went from $80 in gas a week to $20 every week and a half. made a HUGE difference. the gas almost pays for the car lol
we love this car far more than the jeep. the jeep was really nice though had every option they offered for it. we sold it locally and i see it parked around town here and there :) other than having a car payment its something i dont regret doing. i do hate car payments though. we didnt have a car payment for 3 years before we got the yaris.. been tight at times but its nice to not have to worry about the car breaking down

The three reason I decide on the Yaris:
1. Inexpensive 2. Excellent Reliability 3. Fuel Economy |

I wanted something with better mileage than my Jeep (this was when gas prices were close to $5.00) so I did some research on the net and stumbled across YarisWorld. Loved the look of the car, the MPG's and the enthusiastic community. I was sold, kept the Jeep for winter and for the mountains, use the Yaris for everything else.

Ditto! My first car was a '79 Civic hatchback and the Yaris is (IMO) the modern equivalent. It's small, fuel efficient, reliable, easy to work on and fun to drive. The fact that it is a safe car is a bonus.....I was very impressed with how my '09 held up when I rolled it so I bought a new '10 last week!
BTW....was your Civic a 1200 or a CVCC? Mine was a 1200 and I loved it....perfect high school/first car for me. I've owned 3 of them over the years, but they are all but impossible to find now. |

The car in one of my favorite TV shows caught my attention...
Actually, although Psych is suppose to be in Santa Barbara, CA it is actually filmed in Canada; hence the Canadian specs Yaris. Then I had a chance to drive one as a rental car on a work trip, I fell in love but knew I had to get the hatchback (I also love hatches!). I also have a Jeep Wrangler so it evens out my gas mileage (37 MPG vs 16 MPG). I loved my old car, a 95 VW Passat wagon with a VR6; but after 125K+ miles on it, it was starting to show its age. Nothing major, but I knew I wanted a new commuter car and the Yaris just fit the bill perfectly! Cheers! M2 |

Wow, Zombie thread!
1. Needed a car QUICK! 2. It's a Toyota (should be reliable) 3. Mileage - (I'm a closet hypermiler) 4. Hatchback - styling 5. Price (only thing cheaper was my smart which does have a little better standard equipment, but now I have a back seat WHEN/IF I need one, don't normally need it or use it) |

Cash for clunkers! I never would have bought a new car in my life, actually. Got $4550 for my 530i, which was twice what it was worth with all the work it needed. Plus my Yaris sedan is more fun to drive than the BMW, I can really have fun with it and not have to worry about what's going to break next like I did with the BMW (I maintained it myself for 3 years).
