I owned an MR2 Spyder and a couple of Miatas. Great cars! I wouldn't even consider the others on your list... not that Hondas aren't decent, but I just don't like Hondas.

I always thought a Mini would be nice to own and thought I might break my new Honda/Toyota exclusivity policy one day and buy a used Mini. However, after watching that video about $10,000 transmission replacement with no option for repair, I think if someone gave me a Mini all I would do is sell it :)

Just watched the video of the women with the gearbox problems. It appears she has a 2006 Mini Cooper with the CVT transmission. When this transmission breaks down, it is changed out, not repaired. It's been a known weak point in the car's drivetrain for a while. Most of the CVT transmissions in the Mini last until 80,000 to 100,000 miles. This women had 120,000 km on her car which is 74,520 miles. The women is going to have to pay to have the transmission changed if she ever wants to drive the car again.

Mini recommends changing the CVT transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. According to the video, this was not done, ever. In the long run all it would of done is to extend the life of the CVT for a little longer. For new Mini Coopers, the CVT transmission has been replaced with a conventional automatic.

Most dealers today no longer bother with repairing broken parts such as transmissions, they are just replaced. It's not just Mini.

marcus: if you were to get a mini S, get a 2008/2009. The reason why getting a newer mini is because their latest ones are twin turbo charged. 180-190HP (i can't have exact numbers as they seem to have changed since their first TUROB mini) of fun. Not to mention that you get 5.6L/100km highway and 7.4L/100km city... very close to a yaris :)

i think turbo got is up to 208hp for 2009.. doing average of 6.5 sec 0-60. 7.3sec for the previous sc model.

i think s2000 5.5 sec

elise 5.8 sec exige version 3.9 sec

miata about 7.5 sec

mr2 spyder about 7.0 sec

If all that matters is 0 to 60 times then you had better start looking for one of these.
