My Yaris sedan gets better mileage than I normally got with either my 1963 Panhead FL or my 1985 FLTC, both Big Twin dressers. When very attentive to mileage and keeping the speed down to 55 MPH on long highway rides I could just crack 50 MPG on the '85 Evo. The Pan would get in the low 40s under similar conditions. 65-70 MPH would drop the Evo to the low 40s-high 30s, and the Pan to mid 30s. Neither would get out of the 30s with my normal riding, happily twisting the throttle a lot and grooving on the stereo music from the tailpipes.

Big twin bleh ;) I like my little 1200 Sportster just fine.
When I ever get tired of Little Blue, I'll replace him with a Buell XB12. |

I'm only 6'3", but I have the long leg syndrome. So I went with the engine guard and highway pegs to help that out, and of course forward controls.
I tell you the only thing that worries me about the XB12R is mid controls. I just can't imagine getting used to them after the forward controls. You should at least put some pictures of the panhead up! I bet it's a heck of a bike. I need to have the bike and Yaris pose together for a garage picture on here :) |

Things I can do in my Yaris that I can't in my Outback
================================== Come home from the east side and pull a U turn Drive the wrong way up a row of parking spaces and swing around to get into an empty spot facing the opposite direction Park sideways when there is less than a full spot for parallel parking Shift gears while a drink is in the cup holder :-) Take two drinks along for each passenger Get 40+ MPG Store maps and other such stuff Go an entire oil change w/o topping off the oil Park in the garage, and STILL have room to walk around the car Squeeze through tight spaces Think about what a 'cute' car I'm driving Feel smug Recline the back seats! (I just found this one a few days ago!!) Fold the rear seats down w/o removing the headrests (with the front seat all of the way back) Things I can do in my Outback that I can't in my Yaris ================================= Carry loads of bricks Drive down rutted steep dirt roads with a kayak and two bikes on the roof and camping gear in the rear Pull a brand new F-350 diesel pickup out of a snowbank Pass chain controls w/o getting out of the car Take a shortcut through parking lots (over curbs) when they're designed like a maze Consistently start out in first gear w/o restarting the engine Leave the headlight switch in the on position at all times Carry five passengers (including driver) AND their luggage Estimate how much fuel is left using the fuel gauge! Tell how fast the engine is reving for shift points Span and park over a deep ditch w/ three wheels on the ground and one hanging Drive it on those rare days when both cars are in use... No way I'm allowed to take the Yaris then. Last edited by twowheels; 06-05-2009 at 02:13 AM. |

I traded the Panhead for the '85 FLTC. I've got an old pic or two I need to find and scan. The Pan was a total junker when I got it, and really pretty by the time I let it go. Sold the '85 a few years ago when I was fixing up a house and needed the cash. Got off it the wrong way (high sided) 9 years ago and wrapped my right arm behind my head and around my back. I recommend not doing that, if you can avoid it.

I had someone ask me once if my car was highway legal!
I often tell people, "No, not hybrid, just gasoline" I think it's weird when I can see the hood of another car while I'm driving it. I haven't found a U-turn yet that the Yaris couldn't beat!

I re-assure my friends before they get into the car, "Trust me, once you get in... you'll have enough room."

− When you start playing "Slug Yaris" with your kids (an adaption of "Slug Bug," but only hatchbacks)
− When you starting waving at other Yarii (again, only hatchbacks) − When you seen another Yaris, you immediately start a mental list of the mods on it (or lack thereof) − When you laugh at all the souped up/riced Civics and Neons for being so “common” − When you take pictures of your Yaris in front of every interesting thing you see − When you turn your nose up when you see a Pruis − When you compute how much less gas your Yaris takes to make the round-trip commute to work as compared to your Jeep − When you quit computing how much less gas your Yaris takes to make the round-trip commute to work as compared to your Jeep because the monetary difference makes you cringe − When you realize you can clean the windshield of the car while standing in front of it! − When you start surfing YarisWorld on your smart phone while on the toilet Cheers! ...when you sit and read this whole thread and wish there were more.
...when you agree with and do most of them. ...when you are almost late coming back from lunch because you are trying to think of some to add. ...when you spot modified Yari with the enthusiasm most people reserve for Ferrari's and Lamborghini's. ...when your "just won the lottery" fantasy involves what fantastic mods you would do to your Yaris, rather than getting rid of it and buying something else. ...when you have owned your Yaris for years, and still admire it when you catch sight of it or when looking over your shoulder walking away from it.

when you are crazy about your yaris..
..when people driving at the freeway with windows open at 70 miles an hour look at your car and ask "how much will you sell it for me?"
..when you have mazda3 from your work for half a month and you are eager to drive the yaris instead. ..when you look at member's rides in yarisworld and microimage and get jealous! ..when you look at all the accessories to the yaris people have abroad and you can hardly import here a decent floor mats without selling your kidney. ..looking at people's faces at the supermarket when your fill up a yaris with 2 shopping carts and still have a place for 2. ..when you are filling your tank once every 2 weeks ..when you see a yaris with a dent or a broken side mirror and curse the hell out of the people who did the damage.. ..when you give it a name. ..when YOUR GIRLFRIEND calls it by it's name instead of "the car".. ..when your mother prefers to drive it instead! |
