I spent a week with an XSE for review; 6MT and all. I have to say, I'm impressed. I'm literally writing the review now.

Well after a month with the se I ended up trading it for a 2012 Tacoma. I was going to get the xse instead but my truck is tired so now I have a much nicer one. Also, going to hold out for a high performance version that keeps being rumored lately.
The xse with the automatic that I have... Fantastic car. I love it.

With Toyota bringing back the supra and this new corolla that is midly "sporty" there is potential for the future, but I still won't hold my breath.

I'm not holding my breath either... But once the Tacoma is paid off I'll get another manual Corolla hatchback, either whatever faster/better model comes out or the XSE model. They are fantastic cars, I just really didn't like the SE compared to the XSE.

Did anyone see the new Mazda 3?
From initial look. I think the Corolla looks better. But that could all change when we get a more detailed look at it. Apparently it's coming in AWD as well as normal FWD.Now we're talking. Something not right with the Mazda 3 hatch the proportion is a bit wrong. The rear is too bulbous.Gone is rear IRS for a torsion beam. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOGcI9xx4D4 |

The new mazda 3 looks fantastic. Oddly it has a torsen beam rear, which is pretty backwards for mazda, but that's not a huge deal. The fact that they are still offering a manual and several engines is fantastic. I think it looks way better than the corolla, and the colors on the pre-production models look amazing.

Having both an IRS and torsion beam (semi irs) car, I feel the IRS is over rated for a daily commuter. Torsion beam is much cheaper to manufacture and there are only 2 bushings to worry about replacing vs 4-5 per side.
I've always felt.mazda does a good job of balancing fin with fuel efficiency and reliability. Whereas toyota is mostly all at the reliability end of the spectrum. I've always avoided mazda's like the plague due to the horrendous rust which is a huge issue for me. They become the worst looking cars on the road within 5-8 years down here
