It's quite sad as well that they don't even solder the resistor to the wire - just twist the leads around the wire.

It's called wire wrapping and it's actually a technique that's used often in smaller electronics...

Well, we definitely use it in some of our reactor monitoring systems... That, and I teach how to do it, among other things...

yeah this is pretty common, there isn't a real chip that i have seen work...
