2nd gear grinding
So my 2nd gear has started grinding whenever I downshift from 3rd to 2nd over 30mph. If I wait until the car gets to 20mph I can downshift from 3rd to 2nd without any grinding. I changed my tranny fluid about 10k ago and I started using Red Line MT90, soon after changing it to Red line is when I started noticing but it has gotten worse. Since I don't want to force it into second gear I have gotten used to downshift only when it reaches 20mph.
Will I have to replace the 2nd gear synchros? or can a better quality transmission oil help it out? On my turbo honda civic third gear was grinding at some point and I started using GM Synchromesh oil and that stopped the grinding. So I am wondering if I can do the same for the yaris... Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. |

I had an issue with downshifting to 4th. It wasn't until I changed to Royal Purple 75-90 GL4 that it fixed the problem. That was over 2 years ago now.

Did The Royal Purple Help?
I have the same issue. The car has 138,000 miles though.
I can avoid grinding, but my wife cannot and I want to avoid gearbox issues. If changing the gearbox oil helps, I'm in! |

I tried a few oils, all of them met Toyota requirements.
But the original Toyota is by far the best. I was very pesimistic about it (I always am when the discussion about any oil pops up) but this original Toyota stuff is really the best. |

I've heard these gearboxes prefer GL4 dino oil rather than some of these fancy all singing all dancing synthetic oils. I think the Toyota recommended oil for these gearboxes is a single weight not a multi weight. I use this cheap 75W90 semi synthetic GL4 stuff made by Comma and my gearbox seems to be behaving itself.

Royal purple here too. I put 380,000 km on my 2007, original clutch and transmission. Worst to happen was that downshift to first would grind if I didn't slow down to less than 10km/h.
