Still Confused About Gear Oil

Ok, I have a manual transmission, and I want to replace the fluid with synthetic. Do I just have to replace the "gear oil," or is there another oil I have to replace? Is "gear oil" the same as "manual transmission fluid?" Thanks!

I go with Redline MT90. If it weren't available I'd go with Royal Purple.

+1 for Redline MT90. I can't praise it enough.

My 86 mr2 currently has 298k miles. It has the same c50 transmission as you guys do. I switched to redline probably about 20k miles ago. All of my shifts became significantly easier and smoother - more of a gentle pushing into gear instead of clinking into gear. My 2nd gear also used to grind a lot, but that is 75% gone too. It's not a magic tranny fixer, but it REALLY makes a difference!!

Not to mention it's SO easy to change the tranny fluid. My car probably has 1/2 the ground clearance of you guys, and I replaced the fluid without even jacking the car up. But please be careful not to damage/strip the fill/drain bolts! Use the right size sockets!

Search Amazon for MT90 - I got mine from HRP (Hoerr Racing Products), but now I see some people are selling it slightly cheaper. Approx $9/bottle.. I needed 3 quarts for my c50, but the oil capacity of the c50 may have changed in 20 years =p

The hardest part will probably be filling the tranny back up, UNLESS you can find the same bolt on the top that we use in the mr2 (it's NOT a fill bolt - it's attached to the shifter assembly somehow - but it works totally fine for filling anyway).

I can help you do it one day =p

AMSoil was about $9 a bottle as well and it only takes 2 quarts on our 07
