Front brake clunk after reversing

Hey all,
I've noticed that when I reverse and then apply the brakes, there's a clunk sound coming from the front end (brakes?). Is this normal or is something getting loose over time?

Thanks for any ideas,
Jon

Is it a clunk or a grating noise? If it's the latter, that's a condition of brakes on an automatic. because braking is almost always done going in a forward motion, the brake disk is kind of "smeared" in one direction by the frequent braking while it is rotating counter clockwise (or clockwise, on the passenger side). When you brake going backwards the pads are now working against a grain, like cheese over a cheese grater. Hence the noise.

No, it's just a cluck. Could it be the calipers?

If one of the pistons is jammed, perhaps. Hard to diagnose unless you're familiar with brakes.

Try a test. Reverse, and while you still have momentum, brake.

Then, try reverse, then after you come to a stop (with no backward momentum), brake.

nothing to worry about it's just the pads hitting the caliper when going backwards

your pads are supposed to have U shaped shim on top if that shim is crushed or missing it would cause the noise

Thanks for all the input. After searching around the net, as well, it seems it is probably just the pads shifting. I'll just keep an ear out for if the clunk gets louder, etc.

Thanks again,
Jon
