yaris won't start, engine truns over but won't start.
Hi
I'm having problems with my yaris 2000, i went to start it yesterday and all the electrics come on fine but when i turn the key to start the engine i get nothing but a whirring noise (really doesn't sound good) has any1 got any ideas as to what the problem could be? It's as if it's turning over but there's no spark. Thanks |

he gets the whining sound. my guess is the starter gear has broken, or gas pump?

If all he hears is a whining, not the "ca-chooga-chooga-chooga" of the engine turning over, then I would assume the Bendix is shot.
Good sound effects, no? |

My first guess would be battery. Weak battery will still run the interior lights and stuff, but won't engage the starter.
But, why not troubleshoot logically? 1. IS the engine actually turning over? If not, it's a starter or battery problem. 2. Is the tank empty? If is it, put some gas in it! 3. Is there spark? Pull a plug and check. 4. If the car is turning over, there is fuel in the tank and there is spark, that leaves the fuel delivery system and the air control system. Is the fuel pump running? Is the fuel filter clogged? Is the fuel pressure regulator working properly? 5. The AFM could be dead, or wiring or connections to it faulty. Does the engine in your car use a timing belt or a timing chain? A broken timing belt is a possibility with a car that old. If it's a chain, a worn tensioner is possible. I'd start by checking the battery, though. |

How about a bad starter solenoid?

My first thought was battery because that's what my old car used to do when I left the lights on overnight.

Actually, it was my first car that taught me most of these lessons... a FORD.

Hi all,
My GF posted earlier about her yaris. Iv just changed her spark plugs which were filthy and blown the fuel residue out the pies and it NEARLY started grrrrrrrrrr. Engine is turning over so its not the starter motor....... I think the next thing may be as you say some kind of fuel problem but im lost!! Cant actually get it to the garage either.... how do you check for fuel blockages |

my car's had a few issues similar lately, but its an 07 and shouldn't be doing what its doing. it will turn over, and it will start, but once in a while, it'll take longer than it should.
for example, sometimes it'll begin to start, then sound like it's going to turn off, then finish starting, all within 4-5 seconds. i haven't been able to replicate it for any technician, though, and given my poor knowledge of cars and inability to truly mimic the sounds, just makes me sound crazy =P

If it just makes a whiring sound then try tapping the end of the starter with a hammer, wrench, screwdriver or whatever. You *might* get lucky and get a couple more starts out of the starter if it's the starter spring as previously mentioned. Just remember to TAP GENTLY no need to get crazy on it. Yes I did learn this trick from driving a Ford. And yes I had to apply said technique once a month or so for about 10 years before I finally broke down and replaced the starter.

I too learned Toast's trick of getting a Ford starter working by whacking it with a hammer to free the Bendix drive. In fairness, that was a 1940 Ford, in the early 1980s. That was a good car!

Hi! I have a 2007 3 Door Yaris Hatchback with manual transmission and a 3 Cylinder 1KR-FE engine.
Problem: Engine cranks but won't start, sometimes it just about idles for a second. The problem appears to be intermittent and it is now running fine without any attempt to repair. No MIL light is on, no codes. Did anyone else experience such a problem and did you manage to get to the root cause of the problem? Thank You |
