Don't overfill your gas tank!

Topped off the gas tank last week, but overfilled it by accident; a little spilled out.

What a mistake! The car smells very very strong of gas inside now for more than a week! It was so strong that I searched for a possible leak into the cabin, but nothing.

Thankfully, this morning it's not as bad.

Now, I stop filling when the pump stops automatically.

lol I did that for my 01 Mitsubishi Mirage, but for Yaris...i stop once i hear the click. But sometimes the click happens to happen at random times even when its not filled up kimona54. Maybe its just the gas station pumps here, but yea. We get 40+ mpg w/ this car, no need to even fill up all the way ~

For the smell......use Febreeze :)

Best to fill to the "click" and then round up to the nickel. Damage will happen as stated over a long term.

Try to find one of the "odor neutralizer" bags with the volcanic rock/lava stones. Toss it under your seat. Out of site out of mind and it kills just about anything. Once it starts losing it effectiveness, toss it in the sunlight for a few hours and it regains it's strength. You'll never smell it but it works.

Use it in my "Big Truck" after a season of musty carpets from climbing in and out with snow and slush on my boots.

I never top off the tank.. esp. since gas prices are as bad as they are now. I used to do this six years ago... with my nissan sentra. Didn't notice a smell or anything.

Chuck, where are these odor neutralizer bags found? Any particular stores? thanks

I've gotten mine in the past at Lowe's or Home Depot. Now I go to a local Mom&Pop hardware store. They last forever. Still have one from about 3 years ago. I can't remember if it was the "orange" or the "blue" store.

Good price here. The one I have is a zeolite. You could also try a pet store, maybe Petco. They use them in kennels too.

I figure that if I stop at the click everytime, that is pretty close to a set point everytime. I know that if I get to the "flashing last bar", I'm good for about 9 gallons.

Mileage is calculated thusly:

Zero out your trip odometer. (if it is your fist time calculating)

Fill up you tank until it auto cuts off.

Drive until tank is near empty. (doesn't matter really 2 bars or whatever)

Fill tank until it auto cuts off.

Take your miles from the trip odometer and divide by the number of gallons used. This calculates MPG.

Now zero out trip odometer for the next tank.

Try to always use the same gas station and pump for a close as possible calculation. If not the calculations will only be off slightly.

Please don't overfill again. I've had a problem with my wife's Corolla due to overfilling the tank.
It seems like when you overfill some gas will make it's way to the charcoal canister that takes care of the evaporated gas. It will somehow deteriorate and you will get a Check engine light. The canister must be replaced in most cases, and may or may not be covered by the warranty.
My wife's car won't pass th State inspection and since it's a 2001 and there is no warranty anymore I will have to spend about 400 dollars to get the canister replaced, which might not guarantee the CEL to go away.

Just think of the people with big SUVs that top off because they think the extra gas will let them go an extra mile or two.

I've been told that our gas prices were way too high and I've also been told that people are jealous of our gas prices. As long as it stays under 3 bucks, I'm good.
