Flint Mica paint question - Toyota Yaris Forums

i wanna paint my guage clusters/center plastics. not sure what color, but wouldn't mind doin flint mica....i'm guessing they don't make flint mica spray paint...that's the question really. also, if anyone responding has painted their center plastics something other than black, can you post pics?

Paint code is 1EO.

I'm sure a paint shop will have it in a spray can.

Old thread, but figured I'd use this instead of making a new one. Everyone talks about using primer or adhesion promoter, some say both. I'm gonna pain my silver bar on the trunk, and also the center console plastics. Will I need primer, adhesion promoter, or both?

Yea, that's where I'm buying the flint mica, but I'm gonna get the primer, adhesion, and clear coat at a local store. My question is... do I need prime AND adhesion promoter or just one or the other when painting the silver garnish bar on the trunk and the console plastics?

Use the adhesion promotor, then primer, then base coat, then clear coat while wet sanding in between coats. Adhesion promotor is always good to use.

I was going to say if it were not flint mica and more of "standard colors", you can use Krylon Fusion paint for plastics, no need for primer or adhesion promoter. That's what I used in my interior.

Also, I just checked out my local paint shop, and they quoted me at 43 bucks a can!!!!!!!!!!!

Ouch, I'm gonna get the flint mica from automotive touchup for $20, then i'll get the krylon fusion paint for plastics in matte black/satin black, then i'll look at local stores for primer, adhesion promoter, and clearcoat. Prob gonna come close to $50.

Also, what grit sandpaper should I get?

1500-2500 grit for wet sanding. Use the 1500 to get out the imperfections and the 2000 for
base coats and the 2500 for the clear coat. Let the sand paper soak in some water with a
couple drops of dish soap and have a spray bottle with water to keep the part being sanded wet.

With shipping, Automotivetouchup came out to be like 30 bucks for me.

Just the flint mica and shipping is costing me $31. All the other stuff is gonna be at least another $20. I wanted to do it soon, but no garage and the weather forecast said it's gonna rain/be crappy for the next week or two. I'll order/buy the stuff and wait.

Gotcha.....should I get a lower grit for the before process on the plastics/silver bar so the primer/paint sticks better as well?

You can use 600 grit or lower to scuff the plastics or a scotch brite pad will work too.

i got a quote from a good friend of mine to have the front and rear emblems, and the chrome piece across the trunk lid to be painted in Flint Mica and to repaint the red on the grilles for $50.

last winter took a quite a beating to my emblems so i am just going to have it professionally done and not have to worry about the paint peeling.

i have several choices on which shade of red im goin to use. for the initial paint job i just used some cheap Candy Apple Red. I should be getting this done within a few weeks so I'll be sure to post pics when this is complete.
