alright, if there is no tach (liftback), would you be able to figure out when the car redlines? if i do actually get the car (under the hands of parents decision), this will be my first manual car. but since there is no tach, something tells me i may have a problem knowing when to shift.

yea i know you can feel/hear when to shift , but will a newb like me really know when? thanks for the info.

You will, specially on an engine of such size! The sound will be the best help!

You will know, don't worry about it. Just don't drive it like a maniac during break-in (*cough*) and drive it so your shifts to 2nd are smooth. The engine isn't going to blow up if you redline every once and a while.

If you read the owners manual it will tell you what mph to shift at sometimes, well at least it did in my 240sx's owners manual.

That might not be a pretty good idea unless you're very used to Manual Shifting.

Most engine can handle higher than factory pre-set redline limit at least 1.5K Rpm. but redlining every so often is not that good idea. Especially 1NFZ engine.

Me for example, I dont even look at the Tacho in my 8 most of the time, Unless I have to go fast, plus my 8(most cars would) will *beep* when I reach 9K redline *but I still upshift around 9.5K*.

Just follow the manual and upshift when it hits the speed. and install a Tacho meter asap.

no real need for tach.. unless you're running the car hard... you can pretty much tell by sound...

My Yaris manual (Canadian) tells you in MPH and km/h the "ideal" shift speeds.

I think they were (in km/h)

2nd - 24 km/h
3rd - 40 km/h
4th - 64 km/h
5th - 74 km/h

(^^ thats for gearing up)

Gearing down from 5th to 1st, they wer

4th - 65 km/h
3th - 65 km/h
2nd - 40 km/h
1st - 24 km/h

(^^ Yea, gearing out of 5th and 4th was the exact same speed... first manual, so I dunno if thats usual or not... because its like u dont even need to hit 4th if you're gonna gear down sequentially...)

Im almost positive those #s are right, or very close! ... id have to double check though

I dont follow those speeds to a T either, I listen to the engine and check the RPMS...

usually, im in 2nd aroud 20 km/h, 3rd at 40km/h, 4th at 60km/h and into 5th around 80k/km
