Yay! we did it!

thanks mods! i think this will be a very useful forum for the boards (and i hope many will frequent it, lol).

so what is everyone's track or racing experience so far? is there anyone considering starting out?

this is from my previous introduction post:

Quote:
my previous car was a '91 240s hatch that i had since i got out of high school (5 years or so). it was modded almost as soon as i bought it and went through many stages. i was considered pretty hardcore when it came to a street car, it had little to no emenities and was loud, hard, and generally uncomfortable. it was autocrossed heavily (about 12-15 events a year) for about 3 years, then i got into track events. i ran about 5 events a year the last two years and even instructed! :) i passed elise's, G35's, M3's, Subaru's, race prepped Camaro's, and much more! i enjoyed that quite a bit, lol!

so i grew out of that stage and decided to get to work and finish school. i had done two years and quit to race and party, and now i've been back in for a year or so. i love my little yaris though, its really a blast to drive! i cant wait to give it a shot on a circuit! im gonna do some light mods to up the fun factor but keep it pretty civil. i'm trying to decided what thing are necessary for me and go from there.
alright, here we go!

Apexing egg... hahaha. I'm really glad to see this forum started, as I've always wanted to become involved in autox or other forms of more legal racing, but I don't really know where to start.

well, autox is easy. you just find a region doing events, sign up, drive there and run! you really cant know too much until you do it and see. bring a helmet if you've got it, but run what you've got. dont try and set your car up unti you do it and then you begin to learn what you really need. i had to de-mod my 240 after starting to autox and then re-did almost the entire set up. it changed all the time! the two most important things for any thing like this, besides mad driving skill, is shocks and tires. those two will have alot of influence over the way the car drives. not that other things wont, but adjusting a driving set up, those two are critical.

Cool! I think most of you have seen my track review, if not here's a link:

http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1679

I've been to the track a few more times since, and I'm planning to do coilovers, LSD, and shorter gearing next which will make the car much better

yeah, i did see that... very incouraging! my ideal set up would include an LSD, but i've haven't gotten anywhere near that far yet. have you found any LSD/gearing info?? could you elaborate on your tire set up a little more though? i dont know what tire that is and where you could get those types of bridgestones. are you using two different compounds when you say Bridgestone RE555/540S for the front and rear then?

LSD:

KAAZ have them in stock, 1.5 way part #DBT-1621. $925 list.
www.kaazusa.com

TRD also offer one, 1.5 way part #41301-AW004. $900 list.
www.trdparts.jp

Final Drive:

I'm still researching part #'s but from what I can tell the stock North American car comes with 3.722 gearing. In Japan the RS-model comes with 4.312 and TRD offer 4.058 and 3.772 as options. I'd like to get the 4.312 from the stock Japan car, or I also found out that the US Scion Xa/Xb part # and the NCP10 Echo part #'s are different, but I haven't been able to find out what gearing they have yet.
http://www.trdparts.jp/english/list_race-mis_ncp13.html TRD gears are ~ $470 and OEM are about the same.

I'll also fit a clutch and flywheel at the same time I upgrade the trans...

The tires I was running at the last few track days are a JDM tire that was never offered in the US, but it's comparable to the Yokohama Advan Neova A048, and the Kumho/Hoosier DOT R compounds.

You might also check out the new Nitto NT-01's and the Toyo RA1's for a good all around track tire that won't break the bank and will last a bit longer.

those NT-01's are intresting, id probably give them a shot, they are pretty cheap for an R compound.

your lsd/gearing upgrade would really help our car, good luck with it! let us know if you do anything.

Let me add to the original post as well:

previous cars: 96 Honda Integra, 95 Prelude 2.2vtec, 1985 AE86 Corolla...

Been autocrossing for 4 years (on and off), drifting and road racing for about 3 years and have just recently retired from doing this. I am hoping to get back in there again real soon with a new car!

I don't think i'll be racing the yaris anytime soon but i can see that it does have a lot of potential and hope to see more "tracked" yaris out there. right now i just see alot of pimping out their rides. Just remember to simply get out there and start doing it... you will never be "finished" modding your car or waiting for that tire or spring or suspension before you race. If its not your cup of tea then don't pretend that you're a racer talking like you know everything... if you like hard parking... thats fine too! i'm doing it right now :-)

Been to SEMA this last weekend (photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coolinb...7594358212979/)

There were quite a few yaris with supercharger and even turbo... i posted some pics here. Never saw a 5door hatch though.

good luck!

Kenji, You and Charlie should go back to driving Honduh's! Maybe that orange element thing I always thought Charlie looked wierd in the S13 and Evo... maybe he belongs in that gold CRX

Tommy and JT are the last of the JD 86 heads

Nice pics btw... how'd the Tein car look in person? did you see what was done to it? aero brand?
