Automatic Transmission Fluid - Drain and Fill

Hi all,

I just wanted to share my experience with the drain and fill of my 2007 Toyota Yaris automatic transmission fluid. My car has 133K miles and this is the first time the fluid was changed. There was no issue with the transmission but the fluid color was darker than the new ATF fluid.

I used the following tools: 3/8 in 10MM socket $2, 3/8 in socket ratchet, 1/2 to 3/8 socket reducer, 1/2 in adjustable torque wrench, 12 in - 3/4 in copper pipe as a cheat (on the ratchet) to get better torque.

I purchased these parts from Toyota: 10MM allen ATF drain pan plug PN 90341-18016 $5.77 and washer (gasket) PN 90430-A0003 $3.25, 6X 1 L bottle of Toyota WS ATF PN 00289-ATFWS $9.50 each.

I elevated my car on ramps, put a 5 qt oil pan below the car and then attempted to remove the drain plug. It was not easy to remove and I slightly stripped the allen head of the bolt (this is why I needed to replace the bolt with a new one). After the fluid slowed to a drip I replaced the bolt and washer (existing) but this was not a good idea. I tightened the bolt to 35ft-lbs.

I refilled with about 3 bottles of fluid. I check the fluid level with the dipstick and added as necessary.

The following day I noticed a very slow leak and then went to the dealer to purchased more fluid and the bolt and washer.

The following weekend, I did the same procedure, this time using the new bolt and washer, now the leak is gone. I planned to do the 'drain and fill' twice since more fluid would be replaced. I hope this helps anyone who decides to do this work themselves.

If you can change a spark plug or oil on your car, this DIY ATF 'drain and fill' is about the same difficulty. The dealer charges $100 for this same work (done once). This work takes about the same time as changing your oil (about 15 minutes).
