Two Problems
Hi All, it's been a cold winter here in Canada, but the car only recently did not start on the first try. Now I have to delay a few seconds before trying again. Usually it starts on the second try. I can tell the temperature makes it worse. I replaced the plugs and air filter in December. That is it. I checked the ground on the battery. It is secure. That's problem 1. Problem two is the power since repairing the exhaust. It had separated at the muffler flange. I plug welded the pipe together, it wasn't the greatest job and some wire may have gotten stuck in the pipe. The muffler makes a soft whooshing sound when the throttle is release during gear changes. I will do a proper repair with a new piece of pipe later. At least the rattling sound of the exhaust knocking about is gone. Cheers

when you attempt to start does the starter drag at all? also how old is your battery? i personally find the oem battery to be garbage in cold climates. mine only lasted 3 years.

Someone else had the first issue here...
http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53853 ...but it turned out to be a tightness of the - and + battery terminals thing. |

Did you pass by your local crappy tire for a battery check?

On the contrary, it work very well in cold climates. I still have my original panasonic battery from 2006.. It's about die this year, but it's going to last me through the summer when temps warm up. |

My 07's original battery has managed to start up on the first time every time even up to now, in -24 C cold. I wouldn't say the battery quality is bad or good, but I'm sure my conservative driving habits have kept it going all this time. My thing is to make sure the car gets an easy 10 km after every cold start.

Another question, what kind of oil are you running?
Lower-viscosity grades, make it easier for your engine to start from cold because they present less resistance to moving parts and hence take less power from your battery.

Conventional oil. Don't know the viscosity, just the regular stuff Mr. Lube puts in.
