Speedometer calibration

Just the other day there was 5th Gear on Discovery channel. There was a guy attempting to do a big loop. Long story short: http://my107.blogspot.com/2009/05/fi...aygo-loop.html

And so, in preparation for this stunt, the guy needed to calibrate his speedometer. And he did. But how?

I went from 205/45 17 to 205/45 16. And sure, my speed is a bit off now. It doesn't bother me that much, but if calibration is possible, I'd like to do it.

Any info on that?

There's not a way that I am aware of. The microcontroller in the speedometer receives a pulsed signal from the speed sensor. Theoretically, one could adjust the code that translates the pulses into speed to adjust for wheel diameter differences, but there is not a parameter tweakable by the Toyota service tool to do so. Considering that he had one critical speed that he needed to maintain, he probably just calibrated for that particular speed (i.e. used a highly accurate system to compare the visual speed on the speedometer to the "real" speed that he needed to maintain.

So if you run something other than what the car was engineered to run your speedometer will not display accurate info, including an effect on your odometer.

My '08 3 door S came with 185/60/15's.
I run 215/40/17's in the summer, almost an exact match with the 215 .1" bigger.
For winter tires the choice is more difficult. I'm replacing 2 this summer. From my experience skinny is better, in both mud and snow.
I'm thinking about https://www.discounttire.com/buy-tir...nter-studdable 175/65/15, .3 bigger dia.
