Let's see...
- touches driver door to close it when exiting vehicle at pump. - touches fuel filler door to remove gas cap. Both metal. I think I'm good to go without needing to consciously think about it. Sent from my EML-L09 using Tapatalk

Has anyone actually ever started a fire by not doing this? I've heard this since I was a kid.

200 incidents in 30+ years. I don't think it's a real problem, otherwise it would be mandatory procedure to discharge yourself before putting gas. :)

It's been a subconscious habit of mine to touch the key hole (since it isn't painted) before I pump gas. I would also touch those metal poles they have (you know, the ones at the corner of the pump in case you drive into it?). Both Yarii I've had gives my body a lot of static for some reason. I don't have that issue with my FR-S, yet I still touch the key hole. lol.
Also, I think realistically, unless you're running super empty, sparking the fuel would be quite difficult. I think Mythbusters did a test before. |

That must be done outside the car.
You shouldn't fill the can while it is sitting in the trunk or something. Sent from my CLT-L04 using Tapatalk |

Gas cans should be on the ground when filling.

Static electricity discharge Toyota
I've had synthetic materials seat covers in my three Toyotas. All were zappers and, depending on conditions, could make sparks I wish I had in some small engines. It is shocking to experience one of these through the hand. They remind why my usual habit, sometimes neglected, is to get out of the car and first touch the door with my arm...on the outside, somewhere between shoulder and elbow IIRC.
