just a little brain picking if you don't mind...

OK I have come to the reality that I don't need the 2009 yaris sedan base I bought in August. My wife refuses to drive it, and would rather drive our suburban... (lets be honest I would rather also it's comfy, but I'm a realist and gas mileage is killing me) Anyway it only has 4100 miles and the only options are floor mats, cold weather package, MP3 adapter radio, and automatic. It's killing me with it sitting here, but my question is more a market question... I know what the books say the car is worth, but in the real world what should I be asking for it? I know trade in is about $10,000 by the book, and the dealer offered more due to low miles.. but if I sell it on my own where should I be.... thanks in advance.... I just don't want to list it a really high price and still be sitting on it... But at the same time I want to try to keep the beating to a minium.......

Start high, reduce $500 every half week it doesn't sell? You're not going to offend anyone, ask for offers and reject them.

Yeah... start high. Maybe $14,000 - $15,000?

Private sales are great... you can be your own boss with the selling of the vehicle.

Good luck...

My recommendation would be to go on craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites) and Yahoo! Autos (or some such site) and see what Yarii of your year and mileage are selling for in your area. That will give you a good idea of what to ask for initially.

This is the best advice... the market could be good or bad in your area for yari'.

Whoever buys it will thank you for taking the big $3000-$4000 hit on depreciation.Think about that Yaris and the 40mpg when gas goes back up to $5 a gallon and you are stuck with the 10mpg lumbering suv behemoth that will be impossible to sell. Why not sell the SUV and get a car with good gas mileage that your wife does feel comfortable in.Elanta,Civic,Corolla etc.

not really an option because the OP honestly commented that he prefers suburban over his yaris. if he does this, he ends up having to sell the suburban AND the yaris.

i bet you selling the suburban will hit the OP back more with depreciation compared to what he will be losing from selling the yaris.

ok first off, I need a 4x4 for the winter no matter what and something to tow my trailers so a truck/ suv will always be in the driveway. It just happens to be a fully loaded 2002 suburban that is comfy and rides like a dream.... I don't mind the bad gas mileage in the snow just as long as I know myself, my wife, and kids are safe. Yes wifes are expensive, but her driving is not the issue ( I retaught her to drive, and even with my trailers she is fine) No she's not asian either, but I am and can drive just about anything with wheels.... I rarely ever regret selling a vehicle, I get my butt busted that I change vehicles more then my underwear....I usually keep 4-5 at a time and sometimes more and switch it up often and buy/sell a vehicle about every 6 months. I don't really care what I drive just as long as it gets me there safely.
between the both of us we decided to buy the yaris because together we drive approx. 150 miles a day so the plan was to buy a new efficient car that when I get home hand to her, and when she gets home she hands it off. Well as it goes this didn't work out too well and the car is sitting most days of the week. I use it as I can, but most days we are switching cars with the kids and she won't drive it... allI can say is aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh some people just suck....

.
If you dont really care what you drive then why waste all that money on depreciation by exchanging a vehicle every 6 months?
As this is a Yaris forum most members are into the economy factor of the Yaris and usually frown on the SUV community if all they use their gas guzzlers for is single occupant daily drivers, however tradesmen and people with recreational needs who need to pull trailers.Rv's and boats etc get exonerated from our wrath
As for the SUV being safer than a smaller car that maybe the case in some instances but not all instances as the smaller car being more maneuverable can in some cases avoid an accident altogether, and the smaller car has less of a tendency to roll over in an emergency maneuver.

I understand what you are saying, I do not make it a habit of buying new cars every 6 months.... this one happened to be new. Usually it's a good deal on a used car or truck that needs work, fix them then move on, make a few bucks then off to the next one. It's like having rotating stock.... And believe me I am into the economy if I can on the daily drivers... Still Not many vehicles do I regret selling but overall most I miss was my quad cab ram diesel that I could average 27mpg empty.... but have since sold that one.... might be looking for another... who knows

ok... we know how much you'd lose on the yaris.... but have you checked how much you'd lose on the wife? Sure the short term loss may seem high due to attourney costs and such... but really, think about all that gas she'll be using over the rest of her life... what other luxuries would she be unwilling to give up as well.

.....i'm kidding...... kind of.
