2ZR Swap ECU

Good Day. I am in the planning stages of a 2ZR swap for a 2010 Sedan automatic that has an inhibitor from the factory. As far as I can tell the only suitable ECU for managing the dual VVTi engine if using the Xd harness is one from an Xd. It appears that the Corolla ECU's connectors are different and do not have a pinout compatible with the Xd harness.

Is anyone aware of a compatible ECU with inhibitor capabilities that will mate/correspond with the Xd harness?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, immobilizer. Everything I have read indicates the Xd ECU does not have an immobilizer, but I want to retain that feature. So the ECU does have that option?

You would have to get an ecu from an xd that had an immobilizer.

FWIW if you depin the harness so that you can run a non immobilizer xd ecu the red dashboard light will still flash looking like you still have an immobilizer.

It is much harder to find an xd with an immobilizer capability. You will likely also have to program your immobilizer ecu located under the dash with your new XD ecu.

Hence why most of us all chose to forgo the immobilizer.

I see. Was not aware the immobilizer was an option on the xD. Before starting I wanted to explore all options, this information provides another avenue to research!

I could be wrong, it is possible the immo was never available on the xd. I know in the US immo's were mandated much later than in Canada, I think there were available for a year or two for XD's located up here.

A quick parts number cross reference on toyodiy.com shows that the immobilizer ECU was only installed on Canadian xDs from 08/2010 to 06/2014, but never installed on US xDs... Seems that it's possible to have the same ECU part number but not have the immobilizer installed? Maybe something to do with wiring or with pairing through the TechStream tool?

Thanks Cranky, if the part number is the same one would think the ECU carries the option.
I am with you, must be wiring or programming with TechStream. Perhaps I can find a wiring diagram for the Canadian model with the immobilizer for comparison. I have TechStream and a cable, but it is highly unlikely I will find a Canadian xD around..........

Very useful information! Thanks again!

Quick search of the ECU numbers on eBay indicates several are available. enviri, you are speaking of an entire xD?

I am happy to be proven wrong, but I highly doubt you'd be able to update a non immob ECU through techstream. Having spent a bit of time in the software myself and having been through this conversion, I'm not aware of any such functionality provided by techstream.

Also be careful when running parts cross references in toyodiy. Sometimes when you click into the actual vehicle the cross referenced part doesn't always match. Make sure you double check everything by diving into the individual vehicles.

Also be aware that depending on country and model, not every ECU that simply plugs up will necessarily be able to register with your cars immobiliser. It pays to check that the keys and immobiliser chip match. Here in Aus, a mate and I did the exact same conversion into our third gens. His first attempt was with a 2010 motor and mine was a late 2012 motor. I was able to register my ECU, but his didn't work and he had to replace his immobiliser unit with the corolla one. Anyway neither of those motors actually worked in a third gen, but that's a different story. Point of the story is to check key and immobiliser compatibility first. :)

Good points, Stidnam. I was actually having that problem with Toyodiy when looking for these part numbers in the cross reference box--some models returned didn't actually have that part number when you drill down into the diagram.

The other consideration for any ECU swap is wiring compatibility. Unless you go through pin-by-pin and identify all the signals on each ECU, it's not safe to assume that they're interchangeable. That's why we use the xD ECU here, it's basically only missing a few wires and everything is compatible. I've put dozens of hours into that kind of research for the 2ZR swap and I'm doing it again for the entire Yaris wiring system to be able to strip it down to the bare essentials for a race setup.
