Tire Pressure Monitor Sensors....?

I'll probably buy some aftermarket wheels and tires for my '09.

I'll buy the package from the Tire Rack and will have them mount new TPMS sensors, since I want to keep the stock sensors in my stock wheels (which will eventually be fitted with snow tires).

Someone told me that the Yaris and other Toyotas can't "learn" the new TMPS sensor signals and that the car has to be taken to a dealer in order it to accept the new sensors, not trigger a TPMS light, etc.

Is this true?

No, any tire shop can do it. Wal-Mart will do the re-learn for $20.

I guess my question is why? I know the car comes with them installed. So what? Are we all so lazy that we can not just check our tires once in a while?

Tire rack wants $90 for each of 4 sensors, then when I bolt on my summer tires, I have to take it somewhere to have them tell the car to read them? and then again in the winter? Poor planning on Toyota's part if you ask me... "here yo go, you now have tire pressure monitoring, but! It's gonna cost you!" Could they not have just had it be capable of having two sets in memory?!

I think I'll just install the switch and call it a day. Yeah, I'm that guy that actually does check his tires once a month anyways...
