fnkngrv's custom trailer build log
This will be my build log for my custom retrofit trailer. I will provide costs, measurements, etc and update as best as possible. Perhaps this might give guys ideas they would like to incorporate in their projects down the road. :thumbup
When I bought my Bronco a month or so back the guy I bought it from also had an 8x8 tilt snowsled trailer that he was looking to part with since he wouldn't have the truck anymore to haul it around. He was asking 250 for it which was pretty reasonable, but I felt that it was too wide, didn't like the fact that the lights sat pretty much over the center line of the roads and the shoulder, and he had disposed of the sides because they wouldn't work with him loading both of his ATVs. I chewed on whether or not buy it for a couple weeks. After doing other searching for something that fit my tastes and needs better locally, on Craigslist, and weighing in buying a new trailer I decided to just buy his. As luck would have it I was on my way back from Stow, MA 2 Fridays ago and decided to stop by the casino in Bangor. I went in and told myself that I was going to win me my trailer. I walked out of there 20 minutes later after playing only 5 hands of 3 card poker with 265 bucks! I was so thrilled that I actually just gave the guy the 265 rather than just the 250. My goal is to make the trailer as modular as practically possible for whatever I want to use it to haul with the following in mind in no certain order: 1) Be able to have both low walls and high walls depending on the need. 2) Removable sides when the time calls for it. 3) Be able to have the "bed" covered so that I can haul items during in-climate weather. 4) Remove the taillights from being on the sides and also have them reflect on the ground for better visibility. 5) Neat and clean appearance. 6) Have a small storage bin for straps, ties, etc. 7) Have the ability to keep a broom handy for cleanup. 8) Have a way to easily see the trailer edges when backing up at night. 9) Have tie down locations since the trailer only has a pair for each "side" front and back. 10) Have tie down locations on the walls to make life easier if I need to use the trailer with the walls yet without the bed cover. 11) Have the ability to quickly install/remove the walls while still having stability when the walls are in place. After a lot of research I didn't see how I would be able to carry 4x8 sheets of stuff and still have the sides that I wanted without having to extend the tongue bar as well as the trailer frame itself so the compromise for now is that I will build a couple of 2x4 triangle braces to use when/if I want to haul 4x8 sheets of anything until I can come up with a better solution. So far I have had the sides reduced to roughly 6'6" by a local fabricator since my buddy was out of town. My buddy and I put the trailer up on ramps this evening and proceeded to add a section of tube iron across the rear lower section for me to be able to mount the LED light bar to since I could not do so with the two eyelet brackets that the previous owner had welded for tie downs. I didn't want to remove them either as I felt they could be of use down the road. With the rear welding finished and the weld slag ground clean we moved to beginning the process of fabbing the wall supports. The idea is to have the ability for 2' sides as the normal mode of operation and then 4' sides for taller loads. Our method to achieve this will be to use 2" OD tube stock for the sleeves and 1 3/4" OD tubestock for the wall supports. This is where we hit our first roadblock. Unfortunately the original support sleeves even though are 2" OD and look to have the same sidewall thickness will not accept the 1 3/4" OD tubestock as we figured they would. After kicking around ideas for a bit we decided that we are going to break the welds on the flat stock and original sleeves so that we can replace them with new ones. This will be a great opportunity as well to resolve the issue that we found with the original sleeves being askew which would have caused a lot of grief down the road with the walls lining up properly. So that is where we stand. More To Follow...

I do believe you have posted the first ever American photo with a Hortons cup sneaking in. That is so typically Canadian.
