NST Pulley FAILURE!!

hello. check out my sweet pulley!
all other pulleys turn freely.
water pump turns freely.
i can't find any explanation except the pulley itself being made from poop.
you know, for $86 you'd think a company was using quality materials...

Define spins "freely". Looks like to me you had the WP fail, locking up or at minimum not spinning as well as it should causing the belt to rub through the aluminum. how did you not hear or feel this happening. Definitely not a NST pulley issue imo looks like negligence.

water pump is fine. turns without effort. bearing is nice and tight. pump was replaced 25,000 miles ago. coolant is fine. 25,000 miles. pink. it did not make any noise ever until yesterday. today it was louder, so i was checking for an issue. there is not any drag what so ever. all other pulleys are in perfect shape...

We only use OE pulleys now. Some years ago we had the NST crank pulley leave the crank.

Pretty sure I had that happen twice with the Blitz installed on my 1NZ. Not a great way to spend your commute.

The reason you're paying so much for it has more to do with the limited runs. You can't get the same economy of scale that the OEMs do when they negotiate a contract for a million units per year and can amortize the costs of the equipment and engineering over the life of the program. You're paying for multiple tiers of material markup and job shop time on a slow CNC machine that takes time to set up for each part. The OEM parts are cast/stamped and machined/assembled in dedicated equipment that is optimized for speed and cost. No small shop can compete with that for raw price without losing money on the deal.

All that said, that's always a bummer to have something fail so badly.

spins freely: no binding, stuttering, or drag felt
water pump was replaced 20k miles previous.
coolant temp in AM never exceeds 80c; pm never exceeds 85c
pulley temp after 10mi city/15 mi hwy is 69.2F measured with laser thermo.

PULLEY IS GARBAGE!!!

Goddamn . I was just recently thinking about buying the works engineering one. I might have to rethink that.

Does anyone make a harmonic balancer for the 1nz? I've looked around ATI's site and the 1ZZ is there but no 1NZ

If you were on ATIs website you should know better. Its a harmonic damper ;)

Fun fact I worked there like 12 years ago

As far as I know there is no aftermarket damper upgrades for the 1nz, just downgrades.
