My Yaris's maintenance schedule
When I bought my Yaris, I bought one of those service packages. I also got a maintenance schedule booklet with my Yaris and nowhere that I can see in the maintenance log book is there a service interval for a transmission fluid change. Does this sound right to you guys?
Thank you. bj |

If I remember correctly, you drive an automatic right?
My maintenance schedule shows replacement of A/T fluid at 96,000km (~60,000 miles) and again at 192,000km (~119,000 miles).

Hi Wee,
Yes, my Yaris is an auto. I'll look again, but didn't see that in my maintenance schedule. Thanks. bj |

Tranny fluid change
Hi my maint. Book doesn't say to service the tranny. When I asked Iwas told the tranny fluid was good for life. I said but it has a drain plug and that is bad advice to never change the tranny fluid. So I drain it every year and will change the filter this comming year

Every 60-80k miles is good preventative maintenance. Change more often if your car is exposed to temperature extremes and temperature changes.
Part of it is the more dramatic temperature swings that causes the fluid to degrade relatively sooner, losing the chemical properties that enables it to provide proper lubrication and heat transfer. Then again, it might just mean changing the fluid every 50k versus 60k miles. But a bigger part of it is how you drive your car. If you're the type of terrible driver who consistently trashes your car through (attempted) burnouts, driving full throttle over speed humps and potholes or rest your foot on the brake pedal while cruising and hate your life and take it out on your car, instead of fixing your life, you can choose to replace your fluid more often as well, or don't, and end up fixing your transmission. |

The Canadian Maintenance menu says to change the automatic transmission fluid every 96,000 kilometres (60,000 miles). The American Maintenance menu says to "inspect the transmission fluid/oil" every 30,000 miles. If you find anything wrong with the transmission fluid I would assume you should change it although it doesn't say this.
Near the top of my dipstick it says that the automatic transmission fluid does not need to be changed under normal driving conditions. I pointed this out to the service advisor at the Toyota service department where I deal and his advice was to change the fluid every 96,000 kilometres anyways. Roy |
