HELP! Gear Oil change on a sedan
I just got the Amsoil 75w-90 gear oil for my manual Sedan.
Never change tranny oil before. Where is the plug located? Is it hard to change?? Should I go to a shop or can i do it my self? Help! |

Trany Fill & Drain Plug
I would have gotten this up earlier, but have been busy. I hope this is easy enough for you to figure out.

Here's a picture from underneath an mr2 (mk1), which is the same as on the Yaris:
On our cars we can also fill from on top the transmission, since our 20-year-old transmissions often have stripped/stuck fill bolts. (The shiny hole in the picture) Be careful because the bolts have very flat heads, so your sockets will have a hard time keeping grip. Some people have ground down the ends of their sockets because the ends of sockets are rounded. |

buy some metric snap-on sockets, youll be fine worth every penny

Several years ago I picked up a socket set (Met Wrench) that grips the flats vs edges on metric and standard that work real dam good! I have a little bit of everything and do like every thing about Snap On, but the price.

My car has 5K miles. This is my second change, I did the first one at 1K miles with regular oil. Went with Amsoil full syntetic. No magnetic plug. 0w-30 for the engine and 75w-90 for the tranny. You can feel de difference right away!

Yes, yes, I am also a firm believer in Amsoil!!! The only thing I would have done diffrently is gone with 5W-30 in your part of the world. I can't imagine it gets cold enough to take advantage of the 0W-30. What brand of filter do you use?

Yep is hot around here. maybe will change to 5w-30 in 6 or 7 months when I change it again.
Used a WIX filter. |

I also use the Wix. As a matter of fact the NAPA Gold series filter is made by Wix and a tad bit cheaper in my area. How many miles do you plan on running before changing oil again?

I'm thinking 10K miles per change. I know I know that I can keep it longer... but change it at 10k will help me sleep better.

I really do believe that a new (quality) filter twice a year along with top off your oil you could easily drive your car the average 15K each year with only one oil change. Now, if you wanted to get real fancy and do a double filter setup once each year for filter & oil would be no big deal. |
