My Yaris Is Squealing and It Is Not The Belt

Hi all,

So I have a 2008 Toyota Yaris Hatchback and it is making a horrendous squealing noise. This noise happens when you immediately start the car or gas the car after breaking or when breaking sometimes. I thought it was a Serpentine belt issue so I had it replaced a week ago. But, I am still having issues.

I guess this is a common issue with Yaris’s so I youtube’d it and watched “carquestions” video on it and he suggested putting the car into accessory and then igniting the engine to help. It helps some of the time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks :)

Make sure you got the right belt tension... I experienced changing to a new belt and the same sound, in my case it was never the belt at all. When it is loose it will squeal, also when it is overtightened... You should be in the right tension. Other than that if there is still squealing then maybe there could be some other issues (alternator bearing, AC compressor, waterpump) . You can also test this by removing the belt and running the engine for a "short period" just to determine if it is really coming from these components.

There is no belt tensioner on the car, you just adjust the alternator.

Try parking on a level surface. With the engine on or off, it's up to you, engage and disengage the handbrake. If you hear a squeak, it's something in the drum brakes. I couldn't get mine to go away when I still had my Yaris.
