Student daughter lost only key for 2003 Yaris. Best fix?

My daughter who is studying at uni, got her first ever car last week and has been on cloud nine since. No more spending hours a day walking to and from her destination. She was only given 1 key and had not had the sensible thought of getting a spare cut.

She parked at her evening job last night and lost her only key. Plenty of searching and crying since, no luck

Can anyone here suggest best/most cost effectivesolution please? Are these smart keys or just blades that need cutting. I know they have remote fobs, are they just for locks or also immobilizer.

She is in the UK, I have tools that would program the remote but am in the USA.

Not sure if is is a smart key or too old. Also are we able to get key code pattern from dealer by showing them log book, then get blade cut at locksmith

Shei is bei g quoted hundreds of pou ds to solve and is distraught.

Any and all advice appreciated. Thanks

My 2000 Yaris did not have a smart key.

My advice would be to see a locksmith.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

If it is not a chip key, the dealership only needs proof of ownership and vin to replace the key. A locksmith can also do it without needing a template. Don't know how, but apparently they have made skills and can file a blank by hand until it works. Being quoted several hundred pounds to rectify, if it's just a dumb key, is robbery.

Update. The locksmith came out spent hours on it, took ecu home to program. Could not do it so gave her the key for 30 quid but it wont start.

Toyota say its super expensive to fix and she is waiting for another locksmith to see if they can get the ECU. THere are 100 of the ecus on ebay for 10 to 30 quid but all are used so no use.

She has been told the car is technically a wrte off as it will cost more to fix than its worth and is obviously heartbrken having only owned it for 2 weeks.

I am going to try and source her used set of keys, keyness entry ECU, ignition door and boot locks, should nto cost that much from a scrapped 2003 car, then will work as soon as swapped.

Does anyone know the best place to source something like this. I'm in the USA and I cannot see my daughter climbing over cars at a scrapyard so ideally would like to find a place that has them on the shelf ready for sale

or would welcome any other ideas.

thanks in advance

This is terrible is it worth having chip keys? That’s what we’ve been stuck with.

Update. All fixed. I was searching around everywhere for the engine ECU and lockset, this ecu was hard to find with keys 89661-0d180, found one in europe but none in the UK.Toyota themselves said it would cost over 1000 to fix, but they recommended a locksmith Herne Bay Locks. They came out, reprogrammed the ECU, made key and programmed it, also programmed the smart key that the previous locksmith could not do. Total cost from them £285. Daughter is overjoyed, she ended up with 2 programmed keys. So for future reference in Kent, if you get stuck like we did, its worth giving Herne Bay Locks a call on 01227 749494. Lots of people said Toyota is one of the worst keys to lose, but I guess it all about having the right equipment to reprogram rather than replace.
