Quick Rear Drum Brake Question
A couple months ago when my car was being serviced I was told my rear shoes were starting to go. There is usually a noise now from the rear brakes when braking at low speeds. I am adjusting my driving in consideration of less braking power to the rear. Front brakes are 100% good. Is there any additional danger in driving this way for ~500miles before replacing the shoes when I am able to? Could they seize, cause more tire wear, etc?
Thanks for any answers. |

How many miles on the clock?
My rear drums after 140,000 miles have still enough brakepad material to go. I would not be worried about 500 miles - 70 per cent of braking balance is on front brakes anyway. |

I have just over 200k miles. I’ve needed them replaced before. Just want to make sure shoes aren’t like disc brakes where letting the pads go can ruin the rotor/caliper. Thanks for the info.

I can imagine that bruised shoes can damage/scratch the drum which I would be changing anyway together with the shoes. Plus there will be really HORRIBLE noise of metal pushing against metal.
I suppose you know this but let me add just one more point - the layer of braking material on the shoes is very thin, definitely not as thick as on the front pads. For many people the rear drum brakes do not need any replacement during the whole car life. |
