Oil change without changing filter
Hey guys,
I had my oil changed at the dealership (with the regular scheduled maintenance) on Jun 10. I've been busy so I didn't have a chance to pick up any synthetic oil before hand and I didn't want to pay the outrageous cost they charge for synthetic. Is it possible for me to change the oil that they put in and put in the new stuff without swapping the filter? |

not recommended.. if ur talking about air filter then its ok but oil filter can only take so much dirt to filter after that it will recycle them back to ur precious engine. a NO nO..

physically possible... yes
recommended... NO! there will be a different mix of chemicals in the synthetic, and because i cannot know what that mix is, i am just gonna blanket recommend a new filter... on a side note... while it is entirely possible that you might not have any issues at all from doing, think about this... how much is an oil filter(really) and think of it as cheap insurance...

Yeah, just change the filter. Even the high-end ones don't really cost that much. I think I spend around $13 for the mobil1 extended mileage, and run it for 15k.

I believe teddy was refering to changing the oil shortly after the dealer did so, I believe the filter would be relitively new and clean.
If so, I don't see a problem leaving the filter in as most top brands of synthetic state that they are completely compatable with dyno oil. In fact, I have be using a blend of syn and dino oil for years and change it about every 3k. On the other hand, oil filters are realtively cheap and very easy to change on the Yaris. |

The one time I mixed synthetic and dino oil, I dropped a rod in the engine. Although it was a chrysler engine, that had a ticking rod anyway.

If I decide to change it in the next few days I'll probably just change the filter, though I think I'll leave it til the next oil change. |

ok now i think that i am gonna flame for a minute... you ask a question, then you filter your way through the responses until you find the one response that you wanted to hear... if you are looking for a specific response, then don't bother asking where there are people who know what they are doing... i know that i am just being a forum troll right now, and i don't really care...
my point is, when you ask a question like the one you asked, you should take the majority opinion especially when said opinion is backed up by both knowledge of the auto field and previous experience...

I quoted that because it seemed like others didn't know what I was talking about. It seemed like others were under the impression I wanted to do a needed oil change without changing the oil filter. All I wanted to know if it was bad to re-use a 3 week old oil filter that has only been used with 3 week old oil.

ya...the newer synthetics mix. a lot of hype around goin on about whether or not the oils will float on each other or bead up like water n oil...but they dont do that any more.
now...if you were changing oil w/o filter and it's time to change oil...i'd rather go the other way around. change filter if oil is clean and top off w new oil. but it's cheaper to buy 4q of oil and a filter than it ever will be for an engine |

How is that they mix synthetics in "blends" (which BTW can be and likely are as little as 20% synthetic by law) but you shouldn't do it yourself? I call bullshit on this one. I wouldnt mix ester and PAO but since most "synthetics" are really just highly refined grade 3 or 4 oil I don't see any trouble. On the other hand I wouldn't pour clean oil out of a crankcase just to upgrade. Leave it be and change next time.

The fact that the current filter will be saturated with normal oil will make you want to change it if you put synthetic in.
