Firberglassing

As I'm tossing around the idea of creating a fiberglass console for my tomtom+sirius to put them in a more low/profile setup (aka not hanging off my wineshield)....

So then the idea came to me, would it make sense to make a fiberglass replacement for your hood+trunk lids (or in fact replace all of your steel "non" criticel metal parts) to save weight; I'm not sure as to what/if any the weight difference between the metal vs fiberglass is and like i said I'm more just flipping ideas around.

I don't know about NY state, but in Quebec the use of fiberglass body parts is prohibited because it didn't meet the collision standards of the manufacturer. You'll not get a ticket for that because it's almost impossible to see the difference, but if you take an accident... your insurance will do the normal investigation and when they will see fiberglass body parts... outch...

its heavier than carbanfiber, (need more to make same strength) and i belive i remeber someone saying that the weight savings of the carbinfiber hood was very small, and then figure in the amount of effort it would take to make a fiberglass hood, vs the small weight savings....

Fiberglass is somewhere between metal and Carbon Fibre in weight, with CF, most of the weight is in the resin, but in FRP (Fiberglass) there's actually a bit of heft to the material, in addition to the weight of the resin. I think the only weight savings you might see out of a CF hood would be MAYBE 5 lbs, so FRP probably wouldn't even be enough to make it worth the effort.
