i have 175-65-14 on 14x6 rims on my aveo right now.....tires are pretty flush w/ the wheels, so you want to be careful not to curb them or drop the wheels when youre changing them/rotating them

175mm tyres fit safely on 4.5-6.5" wide wheels.

its just that 6" = ~150mm, so w/ 175mm wide tires, theres not a lot of meat protecting the edge of the rim

Yeah, I understand your concern; we all want to protect our precious rims. Thankfully, some tyres have rim protector beads now that provide some protection. I generally look for those when I'm shopping new tyres for alloys. Even then, I pay careful attention not to curb my wheels.
