Changing oil in new Yaris that sat on dealer lot for >9 months.

Hello.

I bought a 2017 Yaris L (5sp stick) last weekend for a great price. The car probably sat on the dealer lot for >9 months, however. Does it make sense to change the oil early, say 1k miles?

Thanks.

If you go the 1K, you might as well go the 5K. Oil wouldn't break down in 9 months and water moisture in the oil, which would be my primary concern, should have long ago burned off at 1K. This is assuming that the oil was fresh 9 months ago

Prolly not necessary BUT hear the story of my 2001 BMW F650. First scheduled valve adjustment 6000 miles but I did it at 600 miles. Both exhaust valves had LESS THAN ZERO clearance! Valves easily would have burnt long before 6000 miles.

If you decide to change the oil do it at 600 miles.

Matti,

How much did you pay, if you don't mind me asking, for your new Yaris?

Thanks.

Hello. I suppose I should say that I "think" it was a "great" price :) I paid $13,585 plus TTL. Assuming Truecar is accurate, it says the price I paid was in the bottom 15% of prices paid for this car recently.

What do you think about the price?

Hi Matti,

I think that's really a great price. Good for you. Reason I ask is that when my
nephew graduates in a few years, I'm thinking of giving him my Yaris and buying
for myself a new 5 speed manual Yaris, which is what I always wanted, anyway. I
regret buying the automatic. Who knows if the Yaris will be in production when he
graduates, but I do hope it is and man I'd love to get a 5 speed Yaris for what you paid
for yours. Good job.

That sounds like a great plan for you and your nephew.

I wasn't necessarily looking for a new car at the time, but I got whiff of the price on this car and I haggled them down a bit. I think they just wanted to get rid of it. Also, like you, I'm not 100% sure that there will be a stripped-down, 5 (or 6?)-speed stick Yaris available in a few years, at least in the U.S. market.

My 5-spd manual Yaris sat around unwanted at a dealership in CO for almost a full year before I found it online and had it shipped to AZ. I'm not sure if the dealership refreshed the car or not prior to selling/shipping it to me, but there were no issues with me waiting until 5K for my first oil change. I'm at 29K now & all is fine. She purrs like a kitten. I switched to full synthetic as of my 25K oil change, but still plan to change the filter/oil every 5K (& both Air filters every 15-20K).

My Yaris sat on a dealer lot over a year before I bought it. Now I don't drive it much (really, at all unfortunately) so it got it's first oil change with like 1700 miles on it since they do them for free every 6 months. The next one it will have 2200 miles on it when I pull it out if storage for the winter lol

My personally, I would go the regular interval unless I know it sat for years and years.
