To Rockland,

You are implying that the bar made the car is "stiffer" and "ride better" all at the same time? Not that I think you are in any position to quantify handling gains.. but thanks for your opinion. I think if I gave you a battery tie down brace you would say the car handled better.
You mean those billet battery tie down braces don't improve handling

I would get a rear sway bar, and the front lower subframe brace. Braces in that area are actually effective. If you don't have a sway bar, definately get one before spending ANY money on braces.

Then enlighten us all as to how the bar made your car stiffer (which you have no way of quantifing) and ride better all at the same time.

I don't need to know your suspension setup to ask you a question about you own comments in post #1.

Too bad us sedan owners don't have anything like that, at least I'm not aware of anything for the rear other than a bottom sway bar.

He simply made an observation, that's all. Even if his words were not the correct ones to describe the feeling, which I'm not saying they are wrong, he still noticed a difference in the way the car reacts. Do you need Loren to back you up on this to justify and say I'm wrong?

Yay, I knew they'd chime in! Where's Loren?

I know the "effect" that Rockland is trying to explain. After installing the TRD rear sway bar the ride was was more comfortable while the handling was better as well. Since I have not tried this brace I don't feel that I am qualified to judge it's effectiveness. Same goes to everyone else. It's like saying you know everything about a movie when you've only seen the trailer.

The reason the car felt better was because his wallet was lighter.

Rockland noticed a difference and he claimed that the car was smoother. If you have basic knowledge of suspension you'll find that it is counterintuitive that stiffening the chassis brings a smoother ride, because road vibration and shock are more clearly transmitted through a rigid chassis.

Unless, of course, that the chassis is so flexy that it flexes more than the suspension does. Bracing this flexy chassis would force the suspension to work.

Given our experience with the Yaris LB this would hardly be the case - to me, the monocoque is stiff enough as it is (but this is subjective). So it is unlikely that you actually gain a smoother ride with the body bracing.

I would love to hear any theory on how a stiffer chassis creates a smoother ride.

I like the bar.

Seems easy to install and remove and cheap enough to have it as an accesory for autox or track days only. When you are not carrying the rear seats anyways.

Agreed. This car has to be very stiff to begin with to make safety standards.

Hey, if you like it that's all that matters.

It's a shame there's no way to really verify whether or not they do stiffen the chassis other than the ol' butt dyno ... er ... "butt skidpad." (Ewww?)

Bolt on braces, always guaranteed to start an argument.

(I prefer welded in ones myself.)
