built motor - coils/wiring

Arthur has completed some of the wiring and installed the pencil coils for the built motor. Sorry for the cell phone pic:

Are you running an ignition amplifier with those coils?

What makes coil packs better than a distributor? I don't know much about coil packs.

direct firing at the spark plug instead of high voltage having to travel a distance from the distributor/coil (line loss)

do the coilpacks go directly to the battery or do they go through the ecu? and is the coil pack a small step-up transformer?

the new "ECU", the standalone management (AEM EMS) will control the coils along with the rest of the motor. It will have a programmed cold start routine, among other things since it's replacing the stock ECU. One extra feature will be the ability to control the electric water pump independently.

The poor stock ecu isn't going to have much to do any more.

I dont think there exist a 'line loss' at 20-30K volts - maybe a greater crossfire/misfire rate due to leakage thru the dielectric. The highest impedance is at the plug gap and the sytem is 'tuned' to resonate across this gap. To its benefit, the coil on a distibutor system has MUCH higher amperage. This is all moot point since This engine is designed for a DLI system so thats what you run.
