999,435 Miles On My 09 Yaris! The Big M Any Day Now!

Nope, Im lying!

Only 40k miles after ~6 years. After driving it around the lower 48 in 2010 (8k miles) and to AK and back in 2011 (10,200 miles) Im currently doing about 3k miles a year. So I will never see 1,000,000 miles!

Not only that, all the mileage is coming 6 miles every time I start and shut down the engine. (over 6000 starts so far...)

I think a lot of the reason people are getting 500,000 miles out of their Yari is theyre driving like 250 miles every time they start it.

Im putting max stress on my car! Im 59 this year...assuming I make it to 75, will the car last me that long? Id like it to and theres no other car anything like the Yaris. (except the Fit...but only four door ones I need two to get in and out) Even the new Yari are made in FRANCE.

So how many miles (and how many years?) will my 09 last me?

Possibly the case with Trini when he was driving all over Florida. I won't make it to 500,000 miles, but it isn't true in my case. I make lots of short trips. The mail carriers in my neighborhood are incompetent (I've received mail for over 20 other houses/familes, some on my street and some on nearby streets. To ensure this doesn't happen to my mail, I have my mail go to a UPS store box. The UPS store is a bit over 5 miles from my house. I stop there 6 days a week when I'm here. Kroger is on the way there, and Wal-Mart is probably a bit over a mile away from the UPS store. I can therefore easily stop at Kroger, Wal-Mart, or both, nearly every day without any extra driving (I find I eat less this way and also avoid any issues with food spoiling). If I go to The Woodlands Mall or Starbucks or Market Street or Trader Joe's...same thing....short trips.

You will. With your sense of humor, you will live a long life.

As great as it is, that is asking quite a bit.....22 years .

I sat in the one at the Houston Auto Show in January. Very tight construction. Seemed very solid.

Hmmm good to hear you got 300k and still made lots of short trips! If I get 150k that'll do it!

My 79 240D was sold in 2000 to buy my ECHO and that was 21 years old and while it needed a little work almosy eveery year it was no big deal. Bought it for $4000 sold it for $2500. It ran great!

Damn, what a change. They were probably the same in speed, but going from a Benz to an Echo? Shudder.

Not really the 240D is 58 hp! Its suspension especially the front end is capable out outstanding handling however. It goes around corners like stink! Miata like you might say. But theres nothing behind it pushing it.

Owning a MB is a social shot across the bow of many people. My wife was at a family reunion with her back to a group or women and heard this conversation:

"I heard the Kneisl's got a Mercedes Benz. It was $4000."

"That was just the down payment, dearie."

When I brought it home my neighbor came over to look it at.

The next day he went out and bought a Lincoln Town Car.

As much as I loved the 204D I liked the ECHO just as much...

Ha! I know. Even owning an old (well, 8 years at the time, so no older than my Yaris now. damn.) E21 BMW 3 series pissed so many people off. Wasn't fast, topped out at 100 mph, wasn't very luxurious (but damn if it didn't have power mirrors) but it sure was fun.

22 years....Volvo...yes....Mercedes...yes (especially diesel)....Diesel Rabbit..yes....ECHO or Yaris....maybe.

You are able to look at it differently, as you could do much of your own repair work if necessary/in a pinch. For those of us who don't know how to do any or many repairs of consequence, I think it would be pretty hard to beat an ECHO or Yaris re overall cost per mile.

Hey around what mileage did you change your serpentine belt? My 2012 currently has 33,800 miles and for the last year or so the belt would squeak slightly for a micro second when the engine was started and was cold. I recently adjusted it and the squeak is gone but not sure if I may have over-tighten the belt.

His screen name on Yarisworld is trini_per4mance. I believe the author was referring to trini's Yarisworld thread that lists his repairs, modifications, etc. Trini also has a YouTube channel, anf I believe the last 'mileage comment' listed 535,000 miles.

I love this post. Cracks me up. A long time friend of the family buys a new Lincoln every year, but as far as I know still has a '63 Impala convertible that he bought new and keeps in pristine condition. One of the last times I saw a particular family member, I asked him "Does Lynn still have that '63 Impala convertible" (yes, a man named Lynn). My family member said "Oh no, he's very successful" . It would seem to me that a guy with plenty of money wouldn't get rid of an old pristine car that he was very fond of unless his wife didn't want him to keep the car. What made my relative's comment more perplexing was that said relative bought a '72 250C new and kept that for many years until he got rear ended and, much to his chagrin, the insurance company totaled the 250C. I guess my relative thinks an old Benz is worth keeping, but not a Chevy. The Impala fan is now 84, and I have a hunch he still has that convertible.

Did your neighbor think you were being unpatriotic re buying a German car ? My grandfather thought buying a foriegn car was unpatriotic. He drove only Lincolns and Cadillacs.

My grandmother called my grandfather either by his first name or "dearie"

No not at all. Havnt seen that kind of opinion since I read "How To Keep Your VW AliveFor The Compleat Idiot" in the 60s and my father saw it. He was strictly a Chevy man and couldnt understand anyone not buying American. HE hated foreign cars! I overheard a conversation between him and mom about my love for VWs. They wondered if they were raiseing a degenerate!

But (after gas prices went up in 73) walking home from college spring break I saw a VW in our driveway. "WHo do we know who drives a VW" I wondered. "And how would they DARE to park it in my fathers driveway!"

It turned out it had a blown engine and he bought it for $300 for me to fix!

ThanksDad!
