i get a "funk" out of my vetilation system

this started shorty after i bought the car back in the end of February. Its only noticeable without running the A/C & its pretty consistant.

I get a serious funk coming out of the vents...it kinda smells like bad B/O & or feet but what could cause this? Mold in the vents? This was a leftover '10 model so it must of have sat for a while

It is probably mold and/or mildew.

There are A/C cleaner and deodorizers available at auto stores.

It helps to not run your A/C on recirc for long periods of time.

check filter

Check to see if there is an air filter behind the right glove box. There's a forum on here about installing a filter if none are there. I did it. If there is an air filter perhaps it needs changed.

I would suggest looking at the cabin air filter. Odds are, you probably don't have one unless you've put one in there.

My 09 Hatch didn't come with a cabin filter and I got it brand new. I noticed that dust kept coming in, and there would be a weird smell after I would run the fan just after I turned off the AC. So recently, I put a cabin filter in, and no more smell.

I had the funk and got rid of it by turning the air conditioning on full with the circulation lever set to outside air, then empty a can of lysol into the vents just under the wipers, the funk hasnt returned going on 2 months now.
PS dont get the spray on your paint, may not do anything but why take the chance.

Febreeze anti microbial works good too. You spray it through the vents under the wipers outside with a/c on max. Afterwards turn your heater on full hot to help kill the bacteria. Once your done a good tip to keep your a/c fresh is dont leave it on recirculate all the time but fresh air when you can. Also when you have had your a/c on all day a few minutes before you reach your destination turn the a/c off and just leave the blower on which will help dry it out. The moisture buildup is what causes the mold and mildew.

Wow this takes me back to the age-old "Questionable funk from the air vents"

If you run the A/C constantly, it helps to turn it off but keep the fan on full blast before getting out of the car. The blowing air will dry-off the moisture in the vents and prevent mildew from forming before you get in again.

Using the search button also helps.

i had no clue this would turn out to be a common issue...so i didn't seach.

i pulse my A/C (since i'm a hypermiler) i run the vents often (like in the morning) I only use the A/C basically in the afternoon ride home.

i always run my A/C on recirculate, but whens its cool enough outside i vent outside air

i went to the parts store the other day, there was a filter listed in the book (but they were out of stock)...do they really not come with filters? Hell my '06 xB had one. I know how to get where its suppost to be, i'll dig in tomorrow after work.

That is your problem.

As the others above have already indicated, you need to open up the airflow a few minutes BEFORE you reach your destination.
If I am ever running A/C with internal recirculation, I switch to external flow and blast the heat on high for two minutes before I turn it off and find this keeps the odour problem under control.

FYI, my Yaris came with the in-cabin air filter. The cabin filter does not eliminate the A/C odour problem. It may minimize mold/odours but it mostly keeps the dust situation under control.

i shouldn't have to crank the heat on in the summer...this is not right. i run A/C on recirculation on every other car i ever owned & drove, i never had a funk before.

this is stupid, maybe i'll pick up a Fiat sooner then i thought

Crank the heat? What are you talking about? He's just saying to switch to open air and near the last few minutes of your ride, turn off the A/C to let the moisture evaporate.
