Warning:: Replica Tails in Canada
so i guess it was my unlucky day.
i got pulled over by the police for my black replica tail lights. yikes! i don't want to stop anyone from buying these beautiful lights, but.. just a warning that they are apparently not SAE approved for canada. guess i should have known/misread the warning myself.. if you were unlucky like me, the police will ding you for it. i received 2 tickets this afternoon, on a nice sunny long weekend. one ticket was a fine for not have "red" reflectors on the lights and one ticket for an appearance for court, because.. they dont have a fine put out for having non-SAE approved lights installed. -sigh- for the time being, i guess its back to the stocks. any suggestions to how to have them approved? |

They won't be approved... unfortunately in Canada and the USA, we get that crazy stuff... and crazy cops for even being that picky...
They have to be approved at the manufacturer level I believe and stamped there... In the USA, from the manufacturer, they have to be tested for reflectors facing to the rear and toward the side and the reflectivity and size of them as well... they also have to be tested so the lights are visible from a specific distance... and then they are stamped for DOT compliance... (Most Ebay lights are not DOT/SAE approved) I get this one all the time, as every one of my cars either has the front, side, or rear reflectors removed or tinted, as they are just plain ugly in my opinion. Luckily the cops have never been too crazy on me about it, as on my show car if they'd have good eyes, I'd have been in a whole lot of trouble. Just the risk of modding I guess. Here's a good resource for USA guys, and it's probably similiar, or tougher in Canada to be compliant... http://fmvss108.tripod.com/taillamps.htm

I'm kind of stupid...so...what do you mean by black replica tail lights? Any pictures of them around? Just so I know if I ever change mine, I'll know what to avoid.

maybe you could get some 3M reflective and attach down the small strips down the side like the OEM? BTY I got pulled over too but when I popped the hatch and showed him they were a toyota part, he was cool with it. I have the JDM tails. Good luck.

I think I saw you the other day, do you have black/bronze wheels, blacked out toyota badge and tint?
If it was you, you were on 16th just across from the university pulling into a little stripmall. |

Well... it just makes safety sense that you have some kind of rear relectors. Without it, you become a serious hazard on the road! Duhhh...
