Anyone using winter tires on their Yaris?
Hi, just wondering if anyone in Canada running winter tires? And what do they use? I'm about to put in a set to the Yaris as the stock tires aren't great performer in snow, just want to see what people recommand here. Thanks!

Good question... us "southerners" (Ohio is a boat ride from Ontario) will start seeing winter here in a few months, and I'm stoked to ride on some 14" steelie snow burners!

And while we're on the topic, studded or non-studded?

Are the stock tires decent for moderate snow?
I just stay home if we get a lot. |

non studded.. i've been driving on pirelli 210 snowsport.. very good snow control.. ok on ice (nothing's really great on ice unless you have studs), and great for winter driving in general.. i'm thinking about going w/ the tirerack survey and trying out the Dunlop wintersport M3's...
always better than stock... all season's are crap... |

I was actually looking into Nokian's, but heard they raised the price by 25% this year, so forget it. Another choice is GT Radial, anyone has experience on them?

I test rode the yaris in the snow back in March/April. Even in a foot of powder, slush and ice conditions the car plowed through the winter crap with ease with the stock all seasons. Braking was still stabil and predictable.
I'm use to driving cars with 4 wheel disk brakes and without ABS as well as trucks in the winter so going back to a FWD car with ABS it handles the snow and ice great with the stock tires compared to other cars/trucks i've owned in the past even with top quality winter tires If I do get winter tires it will only be on the front. |

That's good to hear. Thanks.
Nobody uses snow tires around here - the roads are clear most of the time - but good all-seasons are a must. |

Hi! I'm from Montreal and used to drive in the snow. My suggestion would be the Nokian Hakkapeliitta. It's the best winter tire around, great on snow and ice. If you really want you can even put studs on them but I don't recommend. Unless you live in the mountains or something. But I lived in TO for 3 years and there is no need for studs over there, you'll be in paradise with these tire! Studs are very noisy and ruins your fuel economy.

I'm going to put up the snow tires this week, was thinking about Gislaved or GT snow. Anyone tried these brands? Any comments? Thanks.

I am waiting for some Kumho KW19 175/65/14. I will try to update the thread with my impressions.
Tire studs are essentially prohibited anywhere in Ontario that is south of Parry Sound District because of road damage. http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/faq/vehicle.htm#studs Ontario Hwy Traffic Act - Tire Stds and Specifications: http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/DBLaws/R...h/900625_e.htm |

I though about putting on snow tires. But I won't be.
I spent the weekend driving in some gnarly deep slush, freezing rain, snow you name it. I can plow through this kind of crap with all seasons on the yaris better then my laser with 4 snow/ice tires. Even though I have ABS braking is VERY controled and seldom does the ABS even kick in and traction is great.

wow, that's a lot of snow, was that from last week?
I actually found the stock 4 season a bit slippery... it's the Potenza on mine... that's why I'm thinking about snow tires. |
