weird knock at full lock
hi guys and girls,
i have just bought a yaris 2nd hand and am loving it so far. my only concern is this weird knocking i get in the wheels when im turning at full lock. im not sure how to explain it, the best way i can explain it is like turning in a rear wheel drive with a locked diff?? it only happens during full lock any ideas? |

Does it feels like your tire is rubbing?
Check the plastic liner inside your fender. Mine for some reason (I think autocrossing) got warped. I just pushed on it and it popped back. |

I'd check to see if your CV boots are torn... it's an early sign of your CV joints dying and if they're knocking already, they'll need to be replaced as soon as you can do it.... usually occurs at 80~100K miles.

my car started doing the same thing it knocks when i turn full lock which i rarely do since the yaris has a good curb to curb turning ability or when i back up into my drive way i hear like something with the steering column or the axles it sounds like a thunk hard to explain

I was always taught not to turn all the way to full lock.

My Yaris is a 2008, much too new to have this kind of trouble.
However, I have eventually had this kind of symptom with almost all the front wheel drive cars I ever had (Honda, Nissan) and it's always turned out to be one or both of the CV joints. Get it up on a hoist (not a jack unless you have proper stands - safety first!) and have a good look at the outer CV joints. Chances are that the pleated rubber boot on one or both sides will be torn. If the problem is really longstanding, all the lube will have sprayed out, and the inside of the joint will be full of sand or dirt. |
